The interior of the Mind Flayers' creation differed both from the intricate structures humans imagined inside enormous warships and from the ancient designs of the Elven Imperial Navy, which looked archaic yet brimmed with magic.
The Nautiloid warship's interior consisted entirely of fleshy, biological tissue. Every device and compartment was connected by structures resembling blood vessels and muscles. Beneath its seemingly solid exterior, a living pulse writhed, ceaselessly breathing.
Aaron surveyed the hall with an icy gaze. Several Mind Flayers were operating devices that resembled arms, connecting different strands and pressing buttons on a console. Mysterious psychic connections made the Nautiloid function according to their wishes.
Mind Flayers had always been known for their mystery. As mentioned before, if they had ever enjoyed a glorious age, it had been long ago. According to the books Elminster had given him, Mind Flayers considered other races fit for nothing but food. They planned without hesitation to conquer every other race, gather countless slaves, and devour their brains. Biochemicals and hormones found only in brain tissue were the basic source of nourishment for adult Mind Flayers.
Were Mind Flayers evil? Undoubtedly, because they were born needing to feed on the brains of other intelligent creatures.
Were Mind Flayers evil? Not in their own eyes. To them, they simply wanted to survive and fill their stomachs. What was sinful about staying alive? What was sinful about ensuring their race's reproduction and continuation?
Even people failed to understand one another because of ethnicity, geography, and religious beliefs, let alone different races.
Regardless, the Mind Flayers had caused so much death and destruction that Aaron had no reason to spare them.
