The Shadowfell, also known as the Shadow Plane, was a dimension where every color except black, white, and gray had been drained from everything.

As Shar's stronghold, the Shadowfell was a dark land that rejected light. Its sky was a pitch-black dome, with neither sun nor starlight.

The Shadowfell overlapped the Material Plane in the same way as the Feywild.

Aside from its colorless scenery, it looked very much like the Prime Material Plane within the Astral Plane: endless space, boundless domains, vast clusters of floating landmasses, and dark creatures that dwelled on this plane.

Every landmark of the Prime Material Plane could be recognized in the Shadowfell, but each was warped-a distorted reflection of something that existed on the Material Plane.

A mountain towering over the Material Plane would take the form of a jagged rock in the Shadowfell.

Charlotte had once heard that the Shadowfell and the Feywild were both emotional reflections of the Prime Material Plane. The difference was that the Feywild represented vigorous life, while the Shadowfell represented emptiness and stillness.

This was Shar's stronghold. The Lady of the Night had established her Divine Realm in the deepest reaches of the Shadowfell. No deity had ever merged her divine power with the Shadowfell so thoroughly. Because of the restrictions imposed by the Overgod Ao, Shar could not monopolize its power completely, but any being wishing to draw on the Shadowfell's power had to show this most ancient goddess respect.

The Shadowfell was not devoid of life, either. A power called the Shadowfell Curse enveloped every creature that entered it. If they could not resist this curse, even dragons would become gloom dragons, becoming part of the Shadowfell.
