Background / History

Charlotte grew up in a small fishing village with adoptive parents. Her pink hair distinguished her from the other children, and she eventually realized that her parents were not her biological family. When her divine soul awakened at eight, the villagers became frightened. Her adoptive father publicly insisted that he would raise her to adulthood and challenged anyone who objected to a duel 145.

During her childhood, followers of Shar abducted Charlotte and attempted to extract her bloodline’s divine power for a ritual. Vangerdahast rescued her and brought her to Cormyr. She avoided returning to her village because she feared exposing it to further danger; the experience also left her with a lasting fear of winter 145 402.

Under Vangerdahast, Charlotte became a prodigious Sorcerer and his personally designated successor. Her divine heritage remained unexplained until Selûne identified her as Amaunator’s biological daughter. Amaunator had planned to obtain the portfolio of time in his daughter’s name, but Karsus’s Avatar, Netheril’s collapse, Mystryl’s death, and his own fall disrupted the plan 126 351 405.

Charlotte eventually met Amaunator himself at Blackstaff Tower. Appearing as a beggar, he called her Elysia, explained that he had placed a powerful divine soul within her, and drew on that power until she weakened. He stopped and apologized, then revealed a hidden Temple of Time in Mechanus as a refuge prepared for them 547.

Appearance

Charlotte has a youthful, sweet-featured appearance, a long and slender build, and a height between Eleanor’s and Alusair’s 88 358.

  • Pink hair: Long, silky hair through which arcane radiance visibly flows 132 358.
  • Golden eyes: Originally blue; changed when her divine soul first awakened 145.
  • Formal, elaborate clothing: Wears court-mage gowns, princess-style dresses, winter coats, stockings, and heeled shoes; later also favors academic-style outfits 298 427 623.
  • Fox imagery: Her confrontation with Eleanor produces the image of a pink-furred, golden-eyed fox. The narrative repeatedly uses the fox image for her rivalry with Eleanor 89 391.
  • Stigma: Bears Aaron’s willingly accepted Chaos Mark on her lower abdomen 147.

Personality

Charlotte is lively, enthusiastic, mischievous, and openly affectionate with Aaron. She adopts the role of his devoted “big sister,” enjoys being cared for, and becomes particularly excited by new magic. Her affection for Aaron and Alusair ranks above even her love of magical discovery 41 128 202.

Her warmth is selective. In public she is courteous but distant; with people outside her intimate circle, she can be proud, disdainful, and temperamental. She initially regards Aaron’s ordinary relatives as uninteresting and dismisses paladins as rigid blockheads, although she recognizes their usefulness as trustworthy companions 45 88 126 131.

Charlotte is possessive and willing to manipulate others to secure the relationships she wants. She initiates the King of Hunters plan, discloses Alusair’s private vulnerability, and helps secretly influence her through enchanted clothing. Her confidence nevertheless breaks when Eleanor demonstrates a more established place in Aaron’s life 128 133.

She also values freedom and discovery. Court supervision makes her feel more like a prisoner than a mistress of her own life, while ordinary adventurers’ unfamiliar speech, clothing, and customs fascinate her. Despite her selfishness, she chooses to rescue Aylin rather than sacrifice her for answers about her own origins 393 404.

Abilities & Skills

Cosmic and Divine Soul Sorcery

Charlotte possesses both Cosmic and Divine Soul magic—the two rare affinities she recognizes in Aaron during his first assessment 39.

  • Cosmic power: Draws on the laws governing the sun, moon, stars, and the universe; its strength varies with cosmic energy tides 41.
  • Divine inheritance: Her divine soul and bloodline carry Amaunator’s power. She can summon his radiance and flames directly against enemies 547 596.
  • Resistance to magical predators: Her bloodline-derived divine attacks keep the spell-draining Phaerimm from approaching her 596.
  • Fear resistance: Withstands the dracolich’s Legendary Dragon Fear during the Thunder Peaks escape 142.
  • Extraordinary Charisma: Later possesses extraordinary charisma, making her presence immediately compelling to nearby adventurers 393.

Soul Synchronization

Charlotte’s bloodline forms magical circuits that allow her soul to synchronize with Aaron’s. Their platinum and violet-gray soul radiances visibly mingle during attunement 41.

  • Shares magical knowledge in both directions, allowing each to cast spells known by the other 41.
  • Can sense Aaron’s true thoughts through their linked souls 131.
  • Learns Tzeentch’s Gift through attunement; the spell temporarily grants another intelligent creature mastery of a spell the caster knows 202.
  • Their combined knowledge and affinities make the development of Astral Magic possible 74.

Astral Magic

Charlotte and Aaron adapt Chaos magic to the Realms by using the Astral Plane in place of the absent Warp. Their successful experiments establish a Weave-independent magical tradition later called the Gift of the Stars 74.

  • Casts Armitok’s Web, binding a wooden dummy with luminous threads during their founding breakthrough 74.
  • Excels at teaching the Light and Metal branches to the War Wizards 210.
  • Uses Astral Magic despite the ordinary anti-magic barrier in Shar’s Silent Library trial 402.
  • The system initially has lower power and stability than conventional magic, requires Aaron’s personally written Chaos runes, and carries uncertain long-term side effects 75.

Magical Instruction and Pathway Repair

Charlotte is an informal but technically capable teacher. She diagnoses the tangled pathways that make Aaron’s attempts at ordinary spellcasting cause pain and internal bleeding 40.

  • Suppresses his bloodline magic with a potion, then reshapes his spellcasting pathways through direct magical intervention 40.
  • Enables his first successful casting of Fire Bolt and subsequent use of magic native to the Realms 40 41.
  • Explains Intelligence-, Wisdom-, and Charisma-based spellcasting, but admits gaps in her understanding of subjects such as ki and some aspects of paladin magic 40.
  • Oversees Academy training and estimates that a Battle Mage Corps would require three to five years, partly dependent on further instructional books from Aaron 211.

Combat Spellcasting

Charlotte combines strong spell control with illusions, restraints, movement magic, and large-area attacks 127 190 395.

Spell / Technique Documented use
Arcane Gate Opens a portal from her villa to Dragonmere 40.
Bigby’s Hand, Hold Person, Armitok’s Web Breaks Eleanor’s defense and restrains her during their first Midwinter duel 127.
Teleportation circle Prepares the party’s escape from the approaching dracolich 142.
Fire Storm Provides devastating magical cover during the assault on Tugin’s forces 190.
Wall of Fire Incinerates more than a hundred Skavenslaves in one attack 395.
Greater Invisibility, Haste, Misty Step Uses them while navigating Shar’s assessment dungeon 402.
Mirror Image Counters an Eshin assassin’s duplicates with copies of herself 429.
  • Powerful magic does not guarantee victory: Eleanor defeats her in their later rematch by invoking Selûne’s divine power 300.
  • Warpstone projectiles disrupt her illusions and connection to the Weave; Karsus’s Magic Box prevents a shot from piercing her heart 429 431.
  • Against Gromph Baenre, she is inferior in both magic and skill. Her task is to hold him off rather than defeat him, aided by Amaunator’s saintly power, Aaron’s power, and Vangerdahast 639.

Karsus’s Magic Box — Imagination Manifestation

Charlotte can activate Karsus’s Magic Box to make imagined things real, alter perceptions, and produce memetic effects. Barrel associates its power with Mechanus rather than an original Netherese invention 380 444.

  • Alternate selves: Manifests Paladin, Druid, Cleric, and Mage versions of herself alongside her original Sorcerer form 379 380.
  • Aaron King: Creates an Aaron-shaped construct for movement, combat, and protection 395 403 431.
  • Material alteration: Turns a suspicious beer seller’s drink into truth serum 393.
  • Creation research: Supplies imagined creature templates to Aaron’s Forge of a Thousand Forms, helping produce a living miniature Magical Hippogriff 447.
  • Mental limits: Complex creations consume greater mental energy. An attempted enormous Aaron war-colossus overwhelms her and causes the box to shut down 380.
  • Belief and power limits: The effect fails if she cannot convince herself that the creation is reasonable, and cannot exceed her maximum magical capacity 444.

Shar-Granted Powers

Charlotte receives powers from Shar despite being the daughter of one of Shar’s enemies 447.

  • During the Steady Trial, resonance between the box and temple power lets her become black mist and evade even the True Seeing Eyes 402.
  • Later receives a light-and-shadow key containing tremendous creation power, bringing her close to Legendary advancement 447.
  • Her recognition as a Night Judge does not prevent her from freeing Aylin or opposing Shar’s manipulation 402 404.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Karsus’s Magic Box — Retrieved from a Nautiloid after a voice within her bloodline commanded her to obtain it. Amaunator later reveals that it opens his hidden Temple of Time in Mechanus 380 547.
  • Storage ring — Stores all twenty-eight treasure chests recovered from the Cult of the Dragon’s treasury 141.
  • Salian’s First Volume — Aaron entrusts the Astral Magic manuscript to her so they can continue their research together 75.
  • Salian’s Seventh Book — Taken to Blackstaff Tower as part of the arrangement for Khelben’s instruction; available to him on loan during her studies 494.
  • Dark key — Shar’s creation-power gift, formed from light crossed by shadow threads 447.
  • Cubes of Torment — Deploys two experimental devices made by Aaron to counter Phaerimm spellcasting; they adapt to enemy magic and retaliate with lightning 596.

Relationships

  • Aaron Salian — Student, chosen “little brother,” soul-linked research partner, and fiancé. Their sibling language is affectionate rather than biological; Selûne witnesses their engagement so Aaron can share Amaunator’s protective magic through her 39 41 405.
  • Alusair Obarskyr (“Alice”) — Closest friend and confidante. They promise lifelong friendship and to protect Cormyr together, but their shared attachment to Aaron creates jealousy and strains their bond 133 240 356.
  • Eleanor — Romantic rival and fellow companion. Their hostility includes magical duels and competing claims to Aaron, but Charlotte helps her after Arabel, and the two later become more comfortable with one another 127 196 300 447.
  • Vangerdahast — Childhood rescuer, mentor, and predecessor whose Royal Magister position she is designated to inherit 145 351.
  • Khelben “Blackstaff” Arunsun — Later teacher. Honors his commitment to train her, shares his spell knowledge, and gathers exceptional assistance for her Legendary breakthrough 494 546.
  • Amaunator — Biological father, who names her Elysia. His interrupted plans shape her inheritance; their reunion reveals both his dependence on her power and his determination to reclaim divine authority 405 547.
  • Adoptive parents — Fisherfolk who raised her. Her adoptive father defends her place in the village after her awakening 145 406.
  • Selûne — Divine protector who reveals Charlotte’s parentage, absolves her of blame for Shar’s deception, and arranges her engagement to Aaron 404 405.
  • Shar — Source of childhood persecution, later trials, gifts, and manipulation. Obtains Charlotte’s divine blood through her willing but uninformed participation in the assessment 402 405 447.
  • Lady Aylin / Song of Night — Imprisoned daughter of Selûne whom Charlotte chooses to free instead of killing for knowledge and power 403 404.
  • Nastya — Fellow companion and rival for the “big sister” role around Aaron; they exchange concealed threats and provocative looks 431.
