The conflict between Khelben Blackstaff and Elminster went back a long way. Specifically, Elminster took a reactive approach to preserving peace and goodness in the Realms, while Khelben Blackstaff favored proactive defense in the Realms' major affairs. Ever since he became lord of Blackstaff Tower, the tower, with him at its center, had orchestrated many major events throughout the Realms.
As their differences grew sharper, Khelben Blackstaff began seeking independence from the Harpers, hoping to establish a "good" organization through which he could influence the Realms himself.
As for what Khelben Blackstaff meant by "good," he did not say, and Aaron had no interest in listening to his lofty speeches. Instead, Khelben gave Aaron a crucial piece of information.
"The Fey'ri in Cormanthor Forest are preparing to enter the war. Salya Draegajeth and her three Fey'ri legions, three thousand troops in all, are preparing to join the Eastern Army," Khelben Blackstaff said quietly. "Zhentil Keep has reached an agreement with them. When the time is right, they will emerge from the forest and attack the Western Army's flank."
"Good." Aaron had already received intelligence on this matter, and said nothing more.
"The dark army of Xvim, son of Bane, has also decided to join the war." Seeing little reaction from Aaron, Khelben dropped another bombshell. "Their vanguard commander is your senior from school, Xvim's Warmaster Disma, with fifteen hundred troops. Fuzor will follow behind Disma with twenty thousand. Just then, I received a letter from Fuzor."
Blackstaff took an opened letter bearing Bane's Black Hand Signet from inside his clothes and handed it to Aaron.
Aaron took the letter and had only read a few lines before an amused expression crossed his face.
