The Pole Star Encampment looked different to every deity.
To Aaron, the Pole Star Encampment took the form of the Round Table Hall. In the warm glow of the fireplace, a ring of statues gazed upon the eleven high gods. Dozens of swords stood embedded in the table. Ordinarily, the Chaos Gods deliberated in the Court of the Covenant, but at this moment, eleven greater deities were preparing to cast their votes.
They would judge whether Aaron should hold the [Murder] divine portfolio, in Ao's name.
The Realms had many divine portfolios. Some marginal portfolios could go without a holder, but [Murder] and [the Dead] could not remain masterless for long.
The current situation in the Realms was proof enough. Without a king of the Underworld, the dead had nowhere to go, no judgment to receive, and no way to rest.
Without [Murder], mortals could not find release through death. Sometimes that was good, sometimes bad. But to maintain lasting stability and a dynamic balance in the Realms, there had to be a [Lord of Murder].
Tyr was the adjudicator appointed by Ao. As the leader of the Three Gods of Justice, he was also the most earnest and impatient.
"Everyone, we have summoned you here to make a decision." Tyr pointed his maimed wrist at Aaron below. "Under our agreement, we reserved the Crown of Murder for Aaron Salian. Now, we need you to reach a decision in the name of fairness."
"Before we begin, Aaron Salian, you may speak and explain your reasons. Remember, your words will largely determine whether each member votes in favor."
Tyr struck the table with his gavel. "You may speak now."
Aaron walked to the center of the Round Table Hall. From his perspective, the hall was piled high with parchment and weapons.
