Background / History

Kaguya was born into the Ōtsutsuki Branch Family and assigned to serve Isshiki as his guardian. Under the clan’s hierarchy, guardians had to obey their protected members even at the cost of their lives. Her assigned fate was to become nourishment for a God Tree, despite her belief that she was more talented than Isshiki 361 362.

Refusing that fate, she ambushed Isshiki, fed him to the God Tree, and consumed its fruit herself. She subsequently cut off contact with the Main Family. Although she later described Isshiki as having died, Naruto’s diary reveals that he survived by shrinking himself with Sukunahikona and escaping with a half-destroyed body 25 362 410.

With Kekkei Mōra power, Kaguya ended an age of chaos and became revered as the Rabbit Goddess. She gave birth to Hagoromo and Hamura, who inherited substantial portions of her power 25 419.

Fearing retaliation from the Ōtsutsuki, she cast Infinite Tsukuyomi and used the God Tree to turn people into White Zetsu soldiers. Her sons opposed the process, and she attempted to reclaim their inherited power. Their battle lasted months and devastated the world before they sealed her inside the moon. She left behind Black Zetsu, a manifestation of her will that worked to secure her release 25 298.

Hamura settled on the moon both to guard the seal and to remain close to his mother. His descendants continued living there, though conflict between their Main and Branch Families eventually left Toneri as the last lunar Ōtsutsuki 324.

Kaguya resents the Ōtsutsuki hierarchy but remains proud of her ancestry. Her pride initially extends to contempt for humans: upon entering his household, she threatens the women who address her as a sister 362.

Self-preservation drives many of her decisions. Her White Zetsu army was an attempt to gain any additional strength against the clan, however inadequate the soldiers might be. Her cold demeanor is not always sincere. When Naruto releases her, she initially tries to please him, then deliberately resumes an offended, aloof persona to conceal her diary knowledge and match his expectations.
