Background / History
Sheen Greenwood was sent to the Eternal Night Wall as a Long Night Lord, an appointment he understood to be a political sacrifice. Bishop Castian subsequently confirmed his claim to Blackpine Fief with a black-iron signet ring and promised artisans and Holy Silver ore to help defend it 2 19.
Blackpine’s early defenses were inadequate. After a battle cost 117 lives, Sheen shifted toward fortifications and alchemical weapons that could stop beasts without relying on soldiers to plug breaches. He rejected a broad conventional fortress plan in favor of a compact inner fortress around the Sacred Flame Altar and a deep, layered killing zone 28 31.
Defenses & Military Industry
The Five Rings
Sheen designed five staggered trenches to slow Werewolves, disrupt their attacks, and expose them to defensive fire 31.
| Defensive ring | Principal measures |
|---|---|
| Rending Fang Trench | Stakes, fire oil, and a slippery reverse slope to send charging beasts into the trench 31 |
| Ground-Spike Trap Trench | Weight-triggered mechanisms that drive spikes upward 31 |
| Poison-Mist Trench | Gas made from discarded Lesser Holy Water and Corrupt Rat gland acid to blind and disorient attackers 31 |
| Alchemical Blast Trench | Explosives aimed at powerful leaders and siege beasts 31 |
| Holy-Silver Bone-Eater Trench | Acid-coated barbed netting and Holy Silver to impede regeneration before crossbow fire 31 |
Workshop and weapons
- Steam repeating crossbows — Blackpine tested a semi-automatic model capable of rapid fire, then developed a heavy automatic prototype for stronger targets. Its designs favored repairability and low-tier Sourceblood over costly high-tier fuel 47 58 191.
- Cannons and shells — The Workshop developed a repairable cannon with replaceable barrel sections. Later heavy cannons fired Consecrated Mistfall and Armor-Shattering Shrapnel shells against a wolf pack 112 119.
- Specialist equipment — Poisonfire Mines, Flying Anchor Winches, short repeating crossbows, and Consecrated Shrapnel Jars served distinct defensive and mobile-combat roles 51 127 191.
- Materials — A Blood-Patterned Black Steel vein found beneath a Night Spider nest offered metal suited to boilers, weapons, rails, and fortifications, though securing and mining it required roads, guards, and a Sacred Flame outpost 51.
Administration & Regional Role
- Records and provisions — Blackpine tracked personnel, supplies, work credits, promotions, and contingency plans. Public work-credit notices helped residents understand their rations and rewards 112 114.
- Workforce — Sheen assigned refugees and displaced craftsmen according to their skills, drawing specialists into the Workshop and Coordination Office rather than treating them solely as laborers 42 125.
- Command network — Echoing Platforms carried short-coded reports and orders between fiefs, allowing Blackpine Central Command to coordinate defenses, reserves, and supply routes 145.
- Wider system — Blackpine became the designated center for unified decisions, storage, assembly, and shelter in a regional defense plan. Its standardized equipment and procedures were later presented for adoption beyond the fief 191 208.
Major Conflicts
- First Blood Moon defense — Blackpine survived a Ghoul assault that killed 710 warriors and left 443 more severely wounded or unable to fight. Castian found that its defenders had also driven off a Fourth-Tier Ghoul 89 90.
- Grayblood campaign — With neighboring positions under pressure, Blackpine remained one of three fiefs whose Sacred Flames still burned. Its Workshop, artillery, communications, and purification procedures supported both the remaining fiefs and the arriving expeditionary army 171 177.
- Recovery and expansion — After the Grayblood battle, the population across Blackpine’s seven fiefs stood at just over 25,000, down from nearly 40,000. Blackpine continued operating as Sheen took on wider reconstruction duties 181 185.
- Later Blood Moon season — A subsequent Graymist Defense Zone report recorded 3,109 deaths, no extinguished Sacred Flame Altars, and substantially lower losses than previous seasons under the coordinated defense system 215.
