Background / History
Early Prodigy and His Father’s Death
Kakashi becomes famous throughout Konoha after graduating from the Ninja Academy at five. His former classmates regard him as their generation’s benchmark, admiring his mission achievements even when they resent his talent 2.
His father, Sakumo Hatake—the White Fang of Konoha—takes his own life after public condemnation for abandoning an important mission. Danzo spreads the damaging rumors, while Hiruzen allows Sakumo’s reputation to deteriorate because he prefers Orochimaru as a future Hokage. Kakashi remembers finding his beloved father dead at home and subsequently treats mission completion as a ninja’s overriding duty 6 7.
This attitude alienates his comrades. Four Jonin team leaders complain about him, prompting Hiruzen to seek Minato Namikaze as a teacher who might overcome his emotional isolation 10 11.
Meeting Kazan and Joining Team Minato
Kazan forces Kakashi into a street fight after Kakashi refuses his challenge. Kakashi loses after underestimating him, becoming angry, and dropping his guard. Hiruzen orders both boys to repair the damaged street; afterward, Danzo requests Kakashi for Root, but Hiruzen refuses 6 7.
The confrontation develops into an unexpected friendship. Kakashi brings Kazan home and opens Sakumo’s collection of techniques, giving him access to Shadow Clone and Multiple Shadow Clone. Hiruzen observes their growing bond but assigns them separately, believing Minato unsuitable for Kazan’s taijutsu-focused training 9 11.
Kakashi joins Minato’s team with Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara. During the war, he fights effectively alongside Obito, though their disagreements persist: Kakashi rebukes Obito for pitying enemy casualties while quietly showing concern for Kazan himself 65 96.
Kannabi Bridge and Acceptance of Sakumo’s Legacy
As a newly promoted Jonin, Kakashi leads Obito and Rin behind enemy lines to destroy Kannabi Bridge, an important Rock Shinobi supply route. When Rin is abducted, he immediately chooses to rescue her rather than continue the assignment. Kazan’s reminder that a child should inherit his father’s Ninja Way helps him reconsider Sakumo’s example 140.
Kakashi and Obito assault the captors’ stronghold, defeat the elite Jonin Kakkō, and free Rin. Surrounded afterward, Kakashi offers to hold off the enemy so his teammates can escape. Obito instead stays beside him, openly acknowledging his resemblance to the White Fang. Both are badly wounded before Kazan arrives and breaks the encirclement 141.
On the journey home, Kakashi resolves to become a shinobi like his father. He also asks Kazan for help with Chidori’s control problem and receives the Lightning Release Chakra Mode training scroll in return for his earlier generosity 149.
ANBU and the Shichibukai
Kakashi continues seeking Kazan’s guidance in lightning techniques and swordsmanship. A later attempt to learn swordsmanship from him leaves Kakashi shaken by Divine Departure—and unconvinced that Kazan’s overwhelming strength constitutes conventional blade skill 156 182.
He subsequently joins ANBU, and his former team disbands. Minato also selects him as a guard for the Five Kage Summit 221 240.
When Konoha holds an open selection for the seven captured Mist blades, Kakashi enters for Kiba. He defeats another Lightning Release specialist using Chakra Mode, Chidori, and White Fang’s short sword. After the seven winners are assembled as the Shichibukai, Kazan appoints him captain without objection; he is considered the strongest overall member at that point 245 246 251.
His first attempt to earn a summoning contract ends badly when a giant white wolf defeats him in the Forest of Death. Later, he leads the unit into battle against Moryo’s Undead Army, where decapitating the terracotta soldiers proves insufficient to stop them 252 254.
Sasuke’s Team and the Defense of Konoha
In Konoha Year 63, Kakashi receives Sasuke Uchiha’s newly graduated team, while Naruto is assigned to Obito. The two teams begin competing over mission completion on their second day together 293.
During the Sand and Mist invasion, Kakashi fights the reanimated Chiyo and identifies sealing as necessary to stop the resurrected enemies. White Zetsu infiltrators complicate the battle by impersonating comrades 297 298.
Against Madara’s wooden clone, Kakashi and Obito use Kakashi’s last scroll containing Kazan’s stored Haki. Its released attack destroys the clone’s Wood Release defenses but does not finish it. Kakashi later joins Obito in a coordinated assault while Minato draws the enemy’s attention 310 311.
Appearance
Kakashi is recognizable by his silver hair and the short blade inherited from White Fang. His usual expression remains cold even when he is publicly introduced as a Shichibukai member 141 251.
- Silver hair — helps Rock Shinobi identify him as Sakumo’s son 141.
- Heirloom short blade — carried on his back before he acquires Kiba 6 141.
- Twin Thunder Swords — carried on his back at the Shichibukai’s joint presentation 251.
Personality
Early Kakashi is aloof, mission-obsessed, and dismissive of his former classmates, whom he sees as sheltered children unfamiliar with the shinobi world’s cruelty. His ruthlessness causes repeated transfers between squads 6 140.
His outward severity does not eliminate his concern for others. He criticizes Obito’s compassion as dangerous on the battlefield, yet Kazan detects a protective undertone. Kakashi also visits Kazan intending to comfort him over Chiyo’s death, though the argument with Obito prevents him from doing so 96.
Kazan’s influence helps him accept his father’s values rather than reject them. His decision to rescue Rin and cover his teammates’ escape marks the clearest break from his earlier insistence on mission success above everything else 140 141 149.
He remains perceptive and skeptical. He recognizes that Rin likes him but hesitates partly because Obito loves her. He also sees through exaggerated accounts of Kazan’s swordsmanship and privately regards Thunder Bagua as a repackaging of the same powers behind Divine Departure 156 244 251.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Release and Chidori
Kakashi specializes in Lightning Release and develops Chidori as his strongest known technique of that nature 149 246.
- Chidori concentrates violent lightning in his hand, producing a sound likened to a thousand birds 140.
- Initial limitation: his eyesight cannot follow enemy movements at the technique’s attack speed 141 149.
- Improved control: Lightning Release Chakra Mode allows him to use it without that former restriction 156 246.
- Nature Transformation: his Lightning Release Nature Transformation training is underway during the blade selection 246.
Lightning Release Chakra Mode
Kakashi learns the technique to stimulate his brain and improve his reflexes, addressing the mismatch between Chidori’s speed and his perception 149.
- Wraps his body in lightning and enhances his high-speed fighting style 156.
- Can be used alongside Chidori and sword attacks 156 246.
- Consumes substantial chakra; Kazan explicitly warns him to monitor the cost 149.
- His reserves remain finite: he nears chakra exhaustion while observing Kazan’s fight with the Third Raikage 111.
Swordsmanship and High-Speed Combat
Kakashi combines his father’s swordsmanship with lightning-enhanced movement. His blade and Chidori provide simultaneous threats from opposite hands 156 246.
- Defeats his selection opponent by forcing him into a corner, winning a Chidori clash, and bringing the short blade to his throat 246.
- Uses Kiba and a rapid silver slash to decapitate dozens of terracotta soldiers 254.
- Seeks further instruction because he considers his swordsmanship inferior to Sakumo’s 182.
- Uses the Body Flicker Technique for rapid movement outside combat 294.
Leadership and Battlefield Judgment
Both Minato and Kazan entrust Kakashi with command responsibilities 140 251.
- Leads the Kannabi Bridge infiltration squad and plans Rin’s rescue with Obito 140.
- Commands the Shichibukai, whose members accept his appointment unanimously 251.
- Recognizes that reanimated enemies must be sealed rather than killed conventionally 297.
- Cooperates with Obito in deploying a last-resort weapon and executing coordinated attacks 310 311.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang’s heirloom short blade — Sakumo’s weapon, used by Kakashi alongside Chidori and Lightning Release Chakra Mode 141 156 246.
- Thunder Sword: Kiba — twin blades that amplify Lightning Release chakra, permit hand seals while held, and carry high-frequency lightning capable of cutting through conventional armor and chakra reinforcement 245 251.
- Sakumo’s technique collection — a sealing scroll containing his father’s studied techniques, including the Five Nature Transformations, Shadow Clone, and Multiple Shadow Clone 9.
- Lightning Release Chakra Mode training scroll — supplied by Kazan to help solve Chidori’s control problem 149.
- Stored-Haki scroll — prepared by Kazan as protection for people close to him. Kakashi expends his last one against Madara’s wooden clone; the released power belongs to Kazan, not Kakashi 310 311.
Relationships
- Sakumo Hatake — father and source of his swordsmanship legacy. Kakashi initially rejects the values associated with Sakumo’s failed mission, then chooses to follow his example of protecting comrades 6 140 149 182.
- Kazan — former opponent, trusted friend, mentor, and eventual superior. Their exchange of training scrolls is reciprocal, and Kazan appoints Kakashi captain of his personal unit 9 149 251.
- Minato Namikaze — teacher and Hokage. Entrusts Kakashi with squad command and selects him as a summit guard 65 140 240.
- Obito Uchiha — teammate and rival whose respect develops through shared danger. Obito refuses to abandon him during Rin’s rescue; they later fight together against Madara’s clone 96 141 311.
- Rin Nohara — teammate who harbors feelings for him. Kakashi knows about her affection but is uncertain how to respond, particularly because of Obito’s feelings 11 156 180.
- Might Guy — sparring partner who recommends Kazan as a swordsmanship instructor, inadvertently leading Kakashi into an alarming demonstration 182.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — seeks to strengthen Kakashi’s ties to Konoha, refuses Danzo’s recruitment request, and personally approves his early Jonin promotion 7 11 140.
- Danzo — considers Kakashi’s emotional darkness suitable for Root; his recruitment attempt is blocked by Hiruzen 7.
- Sasuke Uchiha — assigned to Kakashi’s team after graduating from the Academy 293.
