Background and History
Kazan is a transmigrator who grows up in Konoha without a shinobi clan or notable ninjutsu talent. He barely passes an Academy Clone Technique test and concentrates on physical training instead. Expecting the Third Shinobi World War to send inexperienced graduates into combat, he initially seeks enough strength to survive it 1 3.
His victory over Yugito Nii at the Chūnin Exams makes him famous across the Shinobi World. On the Sand front, he fights Fourth Kazekage Rasa, awakens Conqueror’s Haki, and becomes valuable enough that Konoha publicizes his exploits to bolster morale. His solo raid on a Sand stronghold also demonstrates the danger of his independence: coordinated Sand leaders wound and contain him until Minato extracts him 49 54 78 80 81 85.
Konoha later places troops under Kazan’s command, with Shikaku Nara as his adviser. Kazan proposes a solo operation against Hanzō, kills him in Amegakure, and leaves Konan to advance the Rain revolution. Hanzō’s death expands Kazan’s reputation as the Ghost of Konoha and shifts the wartime balance 126 132 133 134.
After the war, Kazan devotes long periods to training in the Forest of Death. He pursues regeneration beyond Medical Ninjutsu, eventually achieving a Sage Body. He later travels between villages to fight Tailed Beasts while collecting Kusanagi Swords; his attacks alarm other villages even when he insists he does not intend to take their Jinchūriki 229 241 258 261 262 271.
Appearance
Kazan is sharp-looking as an Academy student and later becomes an imposing, scarred fighter. His established adult height is 1.95 meters 1 47 271.
- Clothing — Has worn a white suit and a cloak bearing the characters for “justice”; he seldom wears his Konoha forehead protector 98 173 187.
- Sage Mode — His eyes turn dark gold and black facial markings appear, without frog-like traits 100.
- Sixth Gate — Emerald steam surrounds him and his eyes turn white 46.
- Conqueror’s Haki — Powerful releases are accompanied by dark-red or black-and-red lightning 78 84.
Personality
Kazan values freedom and the ability to choose his own path. Although Hiruzen considers him a potential Hokage, Kazan initially refuses the office because he wants to be the freest man in the Shinobi World. He later becomes willing to consider the role, without dismissing its responsibilities 83 150 169.
He seeks difficult fights to test and improve his abilities, often acting before his allies can restrain him. He taunts opponents and trains others harshly, but he also treats wounded Konoha shinobi, frees Rōran’s captives, and responds to Yakumo’s dangerous outburst with mercy 81 85 150 173 241 282.
Abilities and Skills
Physical combat and the Eight Gates
- Iron-fist techniques — Uses punches and compressed-air strikes, including Fist Bone: Impact and the rapid Infinite Fist Bone barrage 47 72.
- Six Powers — Uses Geppo to step through the air, Shave for sudden movement, Finger Pistol for precise strikes, Tempest Kick for vacuum slashes, and Iron Body for defense 35 43 59 77 91.
- Eight Gates — Gains immense power by opening the body’s limiters. Before his Sage Body transformation, opening all eight nearly drains him; afterward, he can sustain the formation indefinitely 187 203 272.
Haki
- Observation Haki — Anticipates attacks, senses emotions and presences, detects concealed opponents, and eventually provides brief glimpses of the future 43 54 92 132.
- Armament Haki — Hardens his attacks and defenses; his blows can penetrate chakra protection and disrupt chakra directly 46 47 91.
- Conqueror’s Haki — Overwhelms weaker-willed opponents and can be applied as a coating for attacks and defense. His first coated strike is instinctive, and early attempts at control also knock out nearby allies 78 79 86 108.
Regeneration and senjutsu
- Life Return — Gives him conscious control over his body, enabling rapid, hand-sign-free healing and unusually effective use of food for energy 74 85 86 155.
- Medical Ninjutsu and Strength of a Hundred — Learns basic healing, then Tsunade’s regenerative technique. The latter initially requires immense chakra 73 74 229 241.
- Sage Mode and Sage Body — Sage Mode enhances his strength, senses and recovery. His later Sage Body grants immense vitality and rapid healing without relying on the Strength of a Hundred Technique’s earlier chakra-intensive state 100 110 112 241 271.
Other techniques
- Lightning Release Chakra Mode — Stimulates his cells for speed and reflexes; it consumes large amounts of chakra and initially makes his movement difficult to control 123 124.
- Earth Release weight techniques — Amplifies the force of punches with the Added-Weight Rock Technique and gains true flight through the Light-Heavy Rock Technique 153 155.
- Shadow Clones — Uses clones in combat and to accelerate training through their returned experience 44 68 100 123.
- Multi-Size Technique — Receives the Akimichi technique under a promise not to teach it to outsiders; uses Life Return to manage its calorie demands during training 155 169.
Equipment and Items
- Weighted armor — Restricts his movement and strength during training and combat; removing it shocks spectators during his fight with Yugito 44.
- Justice cloak — Bears the characters for “justice” on its back 98.
- Explosive-tagged iron balls and fists — Uses them to interrupt attacks and bombard enemy formations 46 68.
- Kusanagi Swords — Pursues the scattered swords and obtains the Heavenly Ten-Handed Sword from a fleeing samurai 258 262.
- Kubikiribōchō — Uses the blade against Jing Uchiha before switching to his fists 190.
Relationships
- Kurenai Yuhi — Knew Kazan from childhood, when he protected her from a dog; later gives him an omamori and makes a home with him in the Forest of Death 3 125 177.
- Hakimi — Tiger companion and summon. Kazan refuses an exclusive bond with Gamabunta because he already has Hakimi, and sends the tiger to Mount Myōboku for senjutsu training 35 73.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher who trusts Kazan with major missions and hopes he will eventually become Hokage 66 150 169.
- Jiraiya — Mentor and wartime ally who encourages his Senjutsu training but repeatedly worries about his solo attacks 85 95 126.
- Tsunade — Opponent turned teacher; instructs him in the Strength of a Hundred Technique after hearing his plan to develop a Sage Body 60 229.
- Minato Namikaze — Rescues Kazan from the Sand leaders, offers to teach him Flying Thunder God, and later spars with him 85 86 124.
- Jing Uchiha — Academy rival whose later plans and threat to Kurenai bring him into direct conflict with Kazan 1 54 190.
- Uchiha Hikari — Trusted companion whom Kazan leaves in charge of the Forest of Death during his travels 258.
- Itachi Uchiha — Admirer and student who endures Kazan’s demanding training and passes on his lessons about protecting others to Sasuke 177 241 279.
- Yakumo Kurama — Apprentice whom Kazan accepts after breaking her genjutsu and sparing her; he gives her a technique intended to help her frail body 282.
- Rasa — Recurring enemy whom Kazan fights to develop his Haki; their encounters leave Rasa wary of confronting him again 78 82 85 258.
