"What did you do to him?"
Steve couldn't help asking.
"Nothing much, just had him hang in the sky to experience an hour of freefall."
Raine spoke in a relaxed tone, as casual as if he had just poured a glass of water.
Loki was terrified enough to doubt his life after experiencing half an hour of it.
Though Hulk was durable, his subconscious was basically just a reckless child. Falling relentlessly for an hour, it would be a wonder if he didn't develop psychological trauma.
"Alright, go explain the misunderstanding to your big buddy," Raine waved his hand. "We need to pull back."
Steve took a deep breath and shouted a thanks.
Raine had just turned around.
The sky darkened abruptly.
A huge shadow instantly enveloped the entire block.
Boom!
Deafening thunder tore through the clouds, fiercely striking the back of a hundred-meter-long Leviathan.
Black smoke billowed from the charred wound, but this behemoth didn't lose power at all, continuing to rampage forward.
Immediately following, a second and a third Leviathan crushed their way out from the corner of a building.
Mid-air, Thor was being chased by a pack of warships, frantically holding his head and scurrying away.
The alien landing craft had unusually fierce firepower.
Their massive bodies were covered in densely packed laser turrets, and the dark blue energy beams poured down like a violent storm.
Though Thor possessed a divine physique and wouldn't die from taking lasers head-on, he couldn't handle the continuous scraping-style agonizing hits either.
What was even more-deadly was that the Chitauri soldiers were gathering more and more like a swarm of bees; had he not flown fast, he would have long since been riddled into a sieve by concentrated fire.
"Channel call! I'm over Third Avenue, I can't hold on much longer!" Thor roared in exasperation. "Where the hell is the green guy?!"
"Ran into a small hiccup, right on my way!" Steve hurriedly replied.
Looking up at the ferocious firepower in the sky, Raine instead nodded approvingly.
Now that was more like it.
How could landing ships deployed by an advanced cosmic civilization be mere iron turtles that only knew how to ram into buildings with their heads?
Carrying a full load of heavy energy cannons for area-of-effect cleansing made practical sense.
"Hulk, move! Go help Thor!"
Steve pointed at the sky and shouted loudly.
Hearing the captain's order, Hulk was granted a pardon, instantly putting strength into both legs.
Bang!
The ground blasted open a huge crater.
Hulk soared into the sky, crashing directly into the side wall of a nearby tall building.
The hard reinforced concrete was as brittle as a biscuit in his hands.
Using the exterior wall of the building for two consecutive rebound jumps, he lunged onto a Leviathan with a roar.
"Holy shit, a purely physical monster!"
A few apprentices raised their heads, dumbfounded.
Raine completely agreed as well.
The structural hardness of modern skyscrapers far exceeded ordinary steel. Hulk could tear them apart like tofu blocks at will, and his physical strength was indeed overbearing.
Just as everyone was eating melon seeds and watching the show.
Hum--!
A low mechanical charging sound overwhelmingly drowned out the surrounding explosions.
Raine turned his head.
A Leviathan slowly swung its massive body around, its terrifying giant maw aimed directly at the street below.
The wide avenue was completely empty, with only Raine and a few fellows wearing sorcerer robes standing foolishly in the middle of the road, even pointing and gesturing at the sky.
In the eyes of the Chitauri commander, this bunch was simply more glaring than a searchlight.
Only to see that within the abyss-like maw of the Leviathan, violent blue energy was rapidly compressing, its light stinging to the eyes.
"Senior Brother Raine! The monster is staring at us!"
Carter's voice directly cracked.
"I'm not blind, I see it."
Raine sighed, his entire face written with disgust. "They really know how to find trouble for themselves."
The moment the words fell.
Boom!
A destructive energy beam the thickness of a water bucket, carrying the might of sweeping away all in its path, erupted from the main gun's muzzle, instantly dyeing the entire street an eye-piercing dark blue.
No wonder even the God of Thunder had to run for his life; a main gun bombardment of equivalent power would cause even Hulk to shed a layer of skin if he took a hit.
Yet Raine didn't even frown, his right hand decisively raising.
"Rings of Raggadorr!"
Hum!
The violent sound of magical resonance resounded through the open sky.
A magic shield radiating a blinding red glow was abruptly formed, swelling against the wind!
Ten meters! Twenty meters! Thirty meters!
Like a wall of light reaching the sky three stories high, it tightly guarded everyone behind it.
The energy beam smashed fiercely onto the giant shield, not even stirring up a trace of ripples.
"Holy crap!"
Old Sorcerer Carter, who had always fancied himself as having exceptionally high composure, had his eyeballs bulge as he cursed on the spot.
It was simply absurdity opening the door for absurdity's sake, absurd to the extreme!
Never mind Raine using miraculous magic that others had never even seen, the Rings of Raggadorr was the most basic defensive spell in Kamar-Taj, something one could conjure with eyes closed.
Yet who would explain how anyone's basic shield could expand to be three stories tall?!
Looking at the majestic halo of magic resembling a city wall, the old sorcerer felt as though the magical attainments of most of his life had been fed to dogs.
The few intern apprentices nearby had long since climaxed from watching, their eyes shining brightly.
"Gosh! So the Rings of Raggadorr are this fierce!"
"It's simply frighteningly huge!"
"When we get back, I'm going to find a mentor to learn this move; I can be this majestic in the future too!"
Listening to the innocent discussions of the apprentices, the corners of Carter's mouth twitched wildly.
Learn your ass!
Even if you guys practiced until you vomited blood, being able to conjure one percent of the shield in Raine's hands would allow you to walk sideways through Kamar-Taj!
Rumble!
The violent energy beam violently burst apart.
The dozens-of-stories-tall buildings around could simply not withstand the terrifying aftermath, instantly collapsing.
The cement dust dancing all over the sky instantly swallowed half the street.
Yet behind the giant wall of light, not even a trace of a breeze penetrated. It was as if there was an invisible barrier, completely isolating life and death into two worlds.
Carter, taking a few apprentices along, looked just like a few stone statues. Staring at Raine before them, they even forgot to blink their eyes.
The old sorcerer cursed wildly in his heart.
Simply a monster! Too perverted!
A basic shield, on what grounds could it take a main gun area-of-effect cleansing head-on? This level of firepower pouring down, even if dozens of Masters formed an array to take it head-on, they would shed a layer of skin. Raine blocked it just by casually raising a shield alone?
Anyone who knew even a little common sense understood that the larger a magic shield was pulled and the wider the defensive area, the weaker the anti-pressure capacity per unit area would be.
Under the same amount of magic, releasing a shield of several tens of meters versus a shield of several tens of centimeters would yield defensive effects that were definitely worlds apart.
Taking Carter himself, even if he exerted every ounce of milk-drinking strength he had, he could at most expand the shield to a few dozen meters, yet taking a few ordinary bullets would shatter it instantly.
On what grounds could Raine open a giant shield three stories tall, and its hardness still be this absurd? Was this really a spell that a carbon-based organism could cast?
Raine completely ignored the dazed crowd behind him.
"Ding!"
"The host's Rings of Raggadorr have successfully blocked a destructive strike."
"Triggered shield-exclusive talent."
"Next time facing the same type of attack, damage is automatically reduced by fifty percent."
Listening to the electronic voice in his mind, Raine nodded with satisfaction. This defensive talent was indeed tough enough.
Pulling back his focus, he once again cast his gaze toward the battlefield.
Mid-air, yet another massive Leviathan came roaring in. The warship's ventral armor opened, and densely packed alien big-headed soldiers jumped down like dumplings.
Upon landing, a large batch of Chitauri soldiers raised their energy guns and unleashed a frenzied barrage at the golden-red wall of light.
Buzz, buzz, buzz!
The dark blue light beams struck the shield without even kicking up a splash. If the main gun couldn't break the defense, a few rifles were simply scraping paint.
