Conis had barely taken two steps out the door when she spotted the White Beret Corps crawling toward them.
The White Beret Corps answered directly to the priests. Wherever they appeared, someone had usually broken the laws of Sky Island.
Conis asked nervously, "Captain, what are you doing here?"
The White Beret captain stood and said, "There are criminals from Angel Island here. They entered illegally and must pay a fine!"
Noil and Robin came out of the house. The captain spotted them and said, "Hey, Blue Sea People! You've broken God's law and committed a level-eleven offense!"
"You must pay ten times the usual fine!"
Noil counted on his fingers. For two people at ten times the rate, that came to two million Beli.
It wasn't that he lacked the money. He could have paid a fine that small for a laugh.
But!
He wasn't playing along!
Expecting Noil to reach into his wallet for a fine this absurd? Not a chance.
Do you have any idea who my sister is?! Noil roared inwardly, tightfisted to the core.
Picking his nose, Noil said, "And what if I don't feel like paying? What are you going to do?"
The White Beret captain flew into a rage. "You're testing God's limits!"
He waved a hand, and the soldiers behind him rose to their feet, glaring at Noil.
Frightened, Conis tugged at Noil's sleeve. "Noil, if you don't have the money, I'll pay for you. Please don't defy God."
Noil sighed. "It isn't about the money. There are no gods in this world, only powerful people who call themselves gods."
Even the monsters among the Four Emperors didn't dare call themselves gods. Enel, holed up on one little sky island, was nothing but a frog in a well.
He had never learned what the Blue Sea could do to him.
Seeing Noil repeatedly insult God's dignity, the captain shouted, "Seize that Blue Sea man! Don't let him insult God!"
The White Berets answered in unison. Using shells that blasted out clouds beneath their feet, they soared into the air and charged Noil.
Noil gave a scornful smile and was about to act when Robin stopped him.
Robin smiled faintly and crossed her arms over her chest. Flower petals drifted down.
Conis and Pagaya could hardly believe their eyes.
The soldiers came rushing in, but arms suddenly sprouted from their bodies midair and twisted their joints until they broke.
The airborne soldiers dropped like dumplings into a pot. In an instant, every last one was down.
Noil smiled at Robin. "You can grow even more hands now."
Wonder if she can grow anything else...
Conis and Pagaya's jaws nearly hit the ground.
And beneath Conis's fear at the attack on God's soldiers, she felt a longing for that mysterious power.
Were there really people with powers everywhere in the Blue Sea?
Could I have an incredible power like that too?
God's Island ### The White Beret captain lay on the ground and roared in outrage, "Attacking the White Beret Corps is a level-two offense! You must face God's Trial!"
At the name of God's Trial, Pagaya and Conis went pale.
God's Trial meant handing criminals over to the priests to be tormented and killed in their trials.
More importantly, the residents of Angel Island were required to do everything they could to trick those criminals into Upper Yard, God's Island!
That was the duty Enel had imposed on Angel Island's citizens!
Unable to bear deceiving Noil and Robin, Conis hurriedly pulled Robin aside and whispered, "Run, Robin! The priests' trials are cruel!"
Robin smiled faintly. "That isn't my decision to make."
Conis froze, then looked toward Noil.
Noil gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. "Don't worry. We won't put you in a difficult position."
"Will you join us?"
Noil looked at Conis as he asked.
The sudden change of subject threw her. "What?"
Noil said, "We're going to Upper Yard. Once we're back, you're coming on an adventure to the Blue Sea with us!"
Without waiting for Conis to agree, he walked up to the White Beret captain. "Hurry up and take us to God's Trial. I can't wait."
The captain had never met a criminal so eager to go. "All... all right," he said before he could stop himself.
The White Beret captain drove his Waver, carrying Noil and Robin unsteadily toward the depths of the sea of clouds.
Conis watched the two of them disappear into the distance, lost in thought.
Could they really defeat God?
And he wants me to join them and go to the Blue Sea...
Conis's faith in God had begun to waver. She also found herself intensely curious about the Blue Sea, where earth covered the ground.
Meanwhile, Noil and Robin sat aboard the captain's craft as if they owned it, leaving him under considerable pressure.
He had seen plenty of poor souls sent to God's Trial. This was the first time he had seen anyone in such a hurry to die.
Only when an island blanketed in greenery came into view did the captain breathe a sigh of relief.
Once they entered the island, he wouldn't have to worry about the pair trying anything.
Noil and Robin stepped onto the island and surveyed their surroundings.
The plants here were exceptionally thick and tall, as though the plants of the Blue Sea had been enlarged several times over.
Dense leaves covered the treetops, letting through only faint sunlight. Noil and Robin exchanged a glance and headed deeper into the forest.
As they ventured farther into the ancient woods, the sounds around them dwindled. The occasional enormous beast sprang out, only to be swiftly sliced to pieces.
Deep in Upper Yard, amid the ruins of crumbling walls, a gigantic beanstalk pierced the sky. A vast palace stood among its massive vines.
In the dim palace, blue arcs of electricity suddenly flared, lighting the entire hall.
The wild bolts converged above the throne, where countless arcs took the shape of a man.
He wore a headscarf and had a pair of conspicuously long earlobes. Bare-chested, with Thunder Drums mounted behind him, he lounged arrogantly on the throne.
This was Enel, the ruler of Sky Island, known as God.
Enel was in a foul mood!
Through his powerful Mantra, he had heard every word Noil said.
Those outrageous words that insulted God and slandered a great being!
Enel had been a heartbeat away from using his power to strike the brat dead with El Thor.
But to his surprise, the brat had come to him instead.
Then he would make him learn what it felt like to be hunted by the priests!
In Enel's palace, four peculiar-looking figures knelt on one knee, respectfully awaiting their god's orders.
Enel looked at his four priests. "Someone with a death wish has entered the island. You can have some fun with him."
The four immediately brightened. "As you command. We'll take care of it!"
Enel nodded. Then he suddenly frowned and sneered. "Those raiders with a death wish are back again."
At the mention of the raiders, all four priests seethed with anger. Shura, the priest in charge of the Ordeal of String, wore a pilot's cap and goggles. He cursed:
"Those damned Shandia dare trespass on God's territory again!"
Another priest, Ohm, who oversaw the Iron Trial, adjusted his sunglasses. "Leave them to me, God. I'll make sure none of them return!"
Enel nodded and turned to the other two. "Aside from those Shandia rats, I'll leave the two criminals to Satori and Gedatsu."
"Yes!" the two answered together. The priests then took their leave one after another. Enel lowered his eyelids and said disdainfully, "How dare mere humans defy God..."
Sensing Enel through his Observation Haki, Noil inwardly scorned the voyeur.
Observation Haki was really only useful for warning you of attacks and locating people or things. If it actually let him see through things, Noil would have kept it active all day.
Just as he finished thinking about Observation Haki, a small figure appeared within its range.
A little girl dressed like a tribal villager was crouching on the ground. She furtively set down her bag and began stuffing handfuls of something into it.
Robin approached without making a sound, but before she could get close, the girl sprang up as though shocked and fled with her bag.
Noil had already sensed what the girl would do. He took one long stride and blocked her path.
Unable to stop in time, the girl ran headfirst into Noil's thigh and fell to the ground with a thud.
Her bag fell open too, spilling dirt across the ground.
Noil picked it up. "You came to steal dirt? Are you Shandia?"
Young as she was, the girl had quite a temper. She glared up at him and tried to snatch back her bag, but Noil held her down with one hand.
In the gentle voice of someone coaxing a child, Noil asked, "What's your name, little girl? How old are you? Do you need our help?"
"Don't call me little girl!" she snapped. "I'm Aisa, I'm eight, and I'm a Shandia warrior!"
"A warrior at eight?" Noil sounded doubtful.
Robin glanced at him and said lightly, "It's not that strange. There was a seventy-nine-million-Beli bounty on my head when I was eight."
Yikes—
Noil tried to remember what he had been doing at eight in his previous life.
As far as he could recall, he had been sitting in front of the TV with his classmates, watching Ultraman and bursting into delighted laughter whenever Daigo switched to his happy form...
Priests Defeated in an Instant ### Robin bent down and stroked Aisa's head. "What are you doing here? Isn't this island forbidden?"
"Nonsense!" Aisa shouted angrily. "This is our home! It belongs to the Shandia!"
Noil returned the bag of earth to Aisa. "Warrior or not, this place is dangerous. Hurry up and leave."
Aisa hesitated, then asked in confusion, "You... aren't the priests' underlings?"
Robin shook her head. "Of course not."
Only then did Aisa relax a little. Hugging her bag of dirt, she lowered her head and walked away without another word.
Robin leaned close to Noil's ear and whispered, "I feel sorry for her."
Noil nodded. "Upper Yard was originally the Shandia's home in the Blue Sea. Then the Knock Up Stream carried it up to Sky Island."
"The rulers of Sky Island took the island from them. Now they have no home, and Enel and the sky islanders treat them like outsiders. Of course she deserves our sympathy."
Robin studied him quietly. "I'm starting to get used to it, but I'm still curious. How do you know so much?"
Noil scratched his head without answering. Robin sighed. "Never mind. Tell me when you're ready."
"Heh..." Noil chuckled. A glint of red suddenly appeared in his eyes.
Aisa seemed to sense something and hurriedly looked back. Noil felt it too and turned in the same direction.
Not understanding, Robin followed their gazes.
At some point, numerous white cloud balls had appeared among the trees behind them, bobbing in the air.
Beside them stood a man as round as the cloud balls themselves. He wore round yellow glasses and watched them with a beaming smile.
"There's another one."
Noil looked in a different direction. A man in a purple leather jacket stood there, his hair shaped like spider legs. Biting his lower lip, he held his arms tangled together at awkward angles.
Aisa cried out in alarm, "Two priests! Why are Satori and Gedatsu here together?"
