At that, he paused before continuing. "I read about this guy in the paper. They say his favorite thing is slaughtering towns, just like the pirates we met on Asuka Island."
"The only difference is that the pirates we met on Asuka Island were mostly small fry. Even their captain was some nobody. Hart Malt is another story."
"Oh..."
With a thought from Kuta, the empty cup in his hand floated over to the tea table behind him. He glanced at Kuina with a faint smile, then turned to A-Luo. "How so?"
Life at sea was boring. There was nothing but water in every direction. If anything made it interesting, it was the endless variety of pirates.
So whenever they encountered pirates, good or bad, they got excited.
A-Luo looked away and turned to Kuta. "Apparently, he used to be a Marine."
"A Marine?"
That piqued Kuta's interest even more.
"Yeah!"
A-Luo nodded. "I don't know why he deserted the Marines. The papers never said. But once he became a pirate, he was worse than the real thing. He did things other pirates wouldn't, and the things they would do, he took even further."
"And every time he raided a town..."
He stopped, drew a deep breath as though forcing something down, and said with a cold gleam in his eyes, "The towns he's been through were wiped out. He didn't spare a single civilian."
"Mm."
Kuta stiffened, then relaxed.
He had no interest in judging how Hart Malt had gone from a Marine who once stood for justice to a pirate of utter evil.
However it had happened, it had nothing to do with him.
What did concern him was that Hart Malt was about to report to Hell.
Of that, Kuta was certain.
"Trying to run?"
A-Luo suddenly
