Background and History

A-Luo trained at Isshin Dojo alongside Kuta, Kuina, Ahua, and A-Tao. As a child, he could not withstand the pressure of Kuta’s Space Domain training, though he admired those who could 1 3.

He was preparing to marry according to his family’s plans when he learned Kuta intended to sail. A-Luo abandoned those plans and joined him instead, taking the lookout position aboard the Fake Merry, later renamed the Freedom 11 29. During the voyage, he worried that he was too weak to help against enemies such as the Arlong Pirates. Kuta reassured him that keeping watch made him the ship’s “eyes” 21.

After receiving the Ant Devil Fruit, A-Luo gained heightened senses, Observation Haki, and the ability to sense nearby weather changes. Kuta added navigation to his duties, and A-Luo chose to develop his firearms skills rather than continue pursuing swordsmanship 46 48 49.

Appearance

• As a child, A-Luo had a crew cut; he later wore his hair spiky 1 21.
• Aboard Kuta’s ship, he is seen wearing leather pants 10.

Personality

A-Luo readily provokes Ahua into arguments, but the two also fight alongside each other; A-Luo saves Ahua from a pirate’s sneak attack before immediately teasing him about it 10 15. He is less defiant toward Kuina, backing down as soon as she challenges him 33.

Kuta considers him dependable enough to remain on lookout duty for an entire day without cutting corners. A-Luo’s decision to leave a settled future behind, eat an uncertain Devil Fruit, and train with a gun reflects his desire to become stronger and more useful to the crew 11 46 49.

Abilities and Skills

Ant Devil Fruit

• Can assume giant-ant and multi-armed Ant-Man forms; the fruit substantially increases his physical abilities and senses 48 49.
• His heightened perception lets him react to approaching movements. Kuta initially distinguishes this fruit-granted ability from Observation Haki 48.

Observation Haki

• Awakens shortly after eating the Ant Devil Fruit. Kuta had expected the fruit’s sharpened senses to help him develop true Observation Haki through training 48 49.

Navigation and Lookout

• Spots approaching ships from the lookout and alerts the crew 12 30.
• Uses his antennae to detect weather changes roughly a few kilometers in every direction. He believes training may extend that range 49.

Combat Training

• Studied swordsmanship for more than a decade before deciding to focus on firearms 12 49.
• Carries a pistol acquired from the Krieg Pirates and seeks a better gun on Prothius Island 33 37.

Relationships

• Kuta — Childhood companion and captain. Kuta values A-Luo’s vigilance, gives him the Ant Devil Fruit, and later appoints him navigator 11 21 46 49.
• Ahua — Fellow crewmate and frequent sparring partner in arguments. A-Luo saves him during a fight with pirates, and the two continue competing over their strength 10 15 49.
• A-Tao — Childhood companion and crewmate. They join Kuta’s voyage together and later argue playfully about their standing among the crew’s fighters 11 49.
• Kuina — Fellow crewmate whose strength intimidates him; she stops one of his arguments with Ahua by punching them both 10 37.
