Properties and Limits

• Power and development: A fruit can grant a supernatural ability immediately, but its usefulness also depends on how the user develops it. Abilities gained through development generally remain related to the fruit’s underlying power 21 73 115.
• Weakness at sea: Eating a Devil Fruit brings a dangerous vulnerability to seawater. Kuta values having crewmates who remain able to swim 21 234.
• Haki resistance: Armament Haki can wound a Logia user even in elemental form, though the result depends on the strength of the Haki relative to the user’s mastery of their fruit. Strong Haki can also resist some abilities that act directly on a target 210 224 343.
• Awakening: An awakened fruit can extend its effects beyond its user. Carteles’s awakened Mountain Lord Fruit makes his illusions real and lets them affect space 184.
• Attraction and taste: Uneaten fruits can strongly tempt people who see them, but A-Luo finds the Ant Fruit revolting to eat 46 49.

Origin and Reappearance

The Otherworldly Flower identifies the energy in Devil Fruits as a variation of Faith Power: a fantasy formed from the collective desires of living beings. This explanation accounts for both their allure and their persistence while the desires behind them remain 402 403. Kuta and Other Shore later propose that Mythical Zoan fruits resembling ancient gods may instead have condensed from faith in those gods; they present this as a theory 430.

According to Kuta, a fruit’s power becomes part of its eater’s soul and reappears in the world only after that person dies completely 457. He captures the Rumble-Rumble Fruit after Enel’s death by sealing his Space Domain around Enel and fruit prepared in advance, preventing the released power from escaping 219. In a separate demonstration, the Otherworldly Flower extracts the energy from Kaido’s Azure Dragon fruit: it becomes an ordinary fruit until the energy returns 402.

Notable Uses

• Ant Fruit — A-Luo: Enhances his body and senses, helps him awaken Observation Haki, and gives his antennae the ability to detect nearby weather changes. He later uses an Ant-Man form to increase his strength and Haki capacity in combat 49 331.
• Rabbit Fruit — Ahua: Grants a powerful rabbit transformation, a Berserk state, brief illusions, and the ability to prepare stamina-restoring carrots. The carrots aid extended training but cannot fully restore the strongest fighters 50 169 230 345.
• Rumble-Rumble Fruit — Kuina: Uses lightning to stimulate her body, accelerate sword strikes, and fire electromagnetic Railgun attacks after eating the fruit recovered from Enel 219 232.
• Hobby-Hobby Fruit — Sugar: Turns people into toys and erases them from others’ memories. Kuta breaks its hold on Kyros inside his isolated Space Domain, restoring both Kyros’s body and Rebecca’s memories 333 338.
• Revive-Revive Fruit — Brook: Returns its user to life and gives Brook powers associated with souls and the chill of the Underworld 252 258.
