Ch. 101Is the Buster Call Still Going Ahead?
Plot points and events
- Kuta and Admiral Kizaru clash on the island. Kuta reveals the speed and skill behind his swordsmanship, then lands One Sword Style: Swallow Return: three slashes strike forward and curve back, breaking Kizaru’s light sword and Armament Haki and drawing blood.
- Kizaru recognizes that he underestimated Kuta. He reforms his sword and fights seriously, but neither man can gain a decisive advantage. They battle across the beach, sea, sky, and island throughout the night.
- At dawn, Kizaru fires Yasakani no Magatama into the island’s central crater. Kuta attacks him from above, and their clash triggers a massive collapse that exposes extensive mine tunnels and pits filled with human skeletons.
- Kizaru realizes the mines are likely the operation’s target and that their contents must be kept from the outside world. The fight remains unresolved: Kuta can evade Kizaru, but cannot easily overcome his Logia defenses.
- Meanwhile, Navy officers wait aboard their ships as doctors treat four wounded Vice Admirals—Yamakaji, Momonga, Doberman, and Strawberry. The doctors report that all four will survive and are awake, so the captains enter to see them.
Character developments and interactions
- Kuta remains playful, teasing Kizaru and mimicking his catchphrase, but turns focused when he attacks. He respects Kizaru’s strength and recognizes the limits of his own teleportation and Space Domain against elite opponents.
- Kizaru drops his initial complacency after being wounded. He reflects that relying so heavily on his Devil Fruit has left his Armament Haki underdeveloped, and he treats Kuta as a serious threat.
- The Navy officers and doctors show concern for the injured Vice Admirals and acknowledge that they cannot safely intervene in the duel. The doctors are also shaken by Kuta’s overwhelming aura.
Significant themes
- Complacency versus adaptation: Kizaru’s confidence in his Devil Fruit leaves him vulnerable, while being hurt forces him to reassess his approach.
- The limits of power: Even formidable abilities may not secure victory against an equally capable opponent; the duel becomes a test of endurance rather than an easy win.
- Hidden atrocities: The exposed tunnels and mass graves hint at the operation’s dark purpose and the human cost concealed beneath the island.
