Power Progression

The clan advances by cultivating Chakra obtained from God Trees and Chakra Fruits. These are documented examples across different members, not one member’s progression 339.

Background and history

The Otsutsuki originate from a barren planet whose surface conceals their settlement in another dimension. Clan members travel between planets to plant God Trees. The trees drain living beings to produce Chakra Fruits, while successful cultivators must also send a share of their Chakra back to the clan’s headquarters and leaders 305 339 389.

A thousand years before the Main Family reaches the Ninja World, Isshiki and the lower-ranking Kaguya are sent there to plant a God Tree. Kaguya, intended as its sacrifice, turns on Isshiki and consumes the Chakra Fruit herself. The clan later issues an execution order against her for betrayal and taking the fruit without permission 293 305.

Isshiki’s surviving soul eventually reveals Kaguya’s location. Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki travel to the Ninja World to execute her, but Rono defeats the trio. The ensuing conflict draws Third Elder Tenshiki to the Pirate world; his death prompts the clan’s leaders to organize retaliation 305 312 324 340.

Arriving Main Family members share visible traits, though their eyes and appearance can change when they use particular powers 310 324 325.

Society and hierarchy

• Strength determines rank. Even elders older than Taiyi defer to him as clan head 386 390.
• The Main Family controls lower-ranking members. Kaguya objects to a system in which someone of her rank can be sacrificed on command; Momoshiki insists that lower-ranking members and other species exist to serve their superiors 308.
• Chakra tribute supports the leadership. Taiyi can detect when a contributor’s Chakra supply ceases, as he does after Tanhua’s death 389 390.
• Scouts precede stronger arrivals. The clan commonly sends a weaker member to investigate a new planet first; Tanhua serves this role when searching for Tenshiki’s killer 385 387.

Abilities and techniques

God Trees and Chakra Fruits

• God Trees draw life force and natural energy from a planet’s inhabitants to grow Chakra Fruits. A tree can exhaust a planet without producing a fruit if its life force is insufficient 305.
• Consuming a Chakra Fruit can greatly increase a member’s power. High-ranking members can also turn a guardian into a Chakra Fruit, as Momoshiki does with Kinshiki 310.
• Fruit cultivation feeds both individual growth and the clan’s Chakra-tribute system 339 389.

Dōjutsu and space-time techniques

• Members wield different ocular powers: Toneri uses the Tenseigan’s gravity abilities, Isshiki uses Sukunahikona to shrink himself or objects, and Momoshiki uses Time Freeze 283 296 309.
• Yomotsu Hirasaka opens passages through space; Kaguya later uses it with the Plow to cross time as well 305 323.
• The Rinne Tensei Eye is exceptionally rare. Taiyi possesses it, while the elders recognize Rono’s matching eye as a major threat 339 340.

Survival, sealing, and soul destruction

• Chakra Fruits can grant an immortal, indestructible body, making sealing a means of containing some Otsutsuki 330 333.
• Kāma preserves an Otsutsuki’s essence in a vessel for a later return. Tenshiki uses Rishiki as a vessel to escape sealing 332 410.
• Otsutsuki Annihilation can erase a soul despite bodily immortality, but destroying another Otsutsuki’s soul requires overwhelming superiority in strength 333.
• The Otsutsuki Godslayer Technique is a formation credited to Shimei for killing a demigod-level opponent. The clan head says its maximum power requires one demigod and ten Beyond Six Paths fighters 341.

• Otsutsuki Taiyi — clan head and demigod who receives Chakra tribute; orders the investigation into Tanhua’s death 389 390.
• Wufa and Wutian — Grand Elder and Second Elder, respectively; investigate Tanhua’s death and fight Rono together 391 398.
• Tenshiki — Third Elder whose death at Rono’s hands brings the conflict to the clan leadership 324 340.

• Rono — kills several clan members and can learn techniques after seeing them, leading the clan head to seek a decisive strike against him 340 341.

Major conflicts

• Hunt for Kaguya: Momoshiki’s group follows Isshiki’s message to the Ninja World. Their execution attempt instead brings them into conflict with Rono 305 308.
• Tenshiki’s invasion: A force led by the Third Elder attacks the Pirate world. Rono defeats Tenshiki, who sends information about him home before dying 324 340.
• Search for Tenshiki’s killer: Scout Tanhua finds Kaguya but is killed by Rono. Taiyi detects the loss of Tanhua’s Chakra tribute and sends Wufa and Wutian to trace him 387 389 390.
• Elders’ assault: Wufa and Wutian locate the planet and launch World Annihilation. After fighting Rono, they flee through the Three Thousand Gates and attempt to contact Taiyi 391 404 406.
