Background and History

Rono came from another world as a small child and was raised by a couple in the East Blue whom he regarded as his parents. At seventeen, he watched Celestial Dragons kill them. His vow to kill every Celestial Dragon awakened his Conqueror’s Haki and the God-Tier Pickup System, giving him a way to pursue an enemy protected by the World Government and Marines 1.

He built a sailboat named Revenge and left home intending to join the Rocks Pirates before the God Valley conflict. On the voyage, he fought Roger, who helped him develop but accepted his refusal to join Roger’s crew. The two later raided a Heavenly Tribute convoy and freed enslaved people; they parted ways after the raid 2 3 4 9 12.

Rono pursued and killed Saint Charlos despite the Marine response, then defeated Garp in a duel. Whitebeard recruited him into the Rocks Pirates, where he earned command of the Seventh Division by reproducing techniques demonstrated by Golden Lion and Silver Axe. After the Golden City battle, in which all nineteen targeted Celestial Dragons were killed, Rocks appointed him vice captain 18 23 28 47 48.

Personality

Rono’s hatred of the Celestial Dragons stems from his parents’ murder. He pursues them relentlessly and is willing to kill their guards or Marines who prevent him from reaching them, but refuses to prey on innocent civilians 1 12 34. He deliberately seeks strong opponents because combat lets him grow, challenging Garp alone for that reason 19 20.

He values independence over an easy place beneath someone else. He refuses Roger’s invitation, negotiates a commander’s position rather than becoming Whitebeard’s subordinate, and remains wary of the Rocks commanders’ claims of camaraderie 3 18 29.
