Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Marine handyman → Private First Class | 3 | Joins the Marines around the period after Roger’s execution. By his introduction, he is considered the strongest person below Atlas at Loguetown Base, though he doubts he could withstand even one of Atlas’s moves. |
| Smoke-Smoke Fruit user | 10 | Reveals his Logia powers during a challenge against Atlas. He found the fruit on a deserted island while pursuing pirates roughly half a year earlier. |
| Improved stamina and fruit control | 12 | Takes up Atlas’s physical-conditioning regimen. His stronger body makes using and developing his Devil Fruit easier. |
| Doriki: 800 | 15 | Records a superhuman physical-strength score at the Recruit Camp entrance test. Doriki measures physical ability, not total combat strength. |
| Focused Six Powers training | 19 | Specializes in Finger Pistol, Shave, and Iron Body after the recruits’ defeat by Atlas. Combines Finger Pistol with White Fist and defeats Hina in the year-end assessment. |
| Recruit Camp graduate; reportedly Major | 48 | Graduates the previous year. Atlas recalls that his initial rank appeared to be Major; disobeying orders during his graduation trial cost him a better evaluation and promotion. |
| Rudimentary Observation Haki | 57 | Recently awakens the ability after years of working toward it under Zephyr’s guidance. Uses smoke transformation to evade Atlas’s punch, but loses focus and is immediately caught. |
| Newly promoted; two-color Haki | 80 | Has awakened both Observation and Armament Haki. Observation is passable, while Armament still functions intermittently. His developed Logia powers make him substantially stronger than his original-timeline counterpart at this point. |
| Lieutenant Colonel | 99 | Explicitly identified by this rank while handling Atlas’s paperwork and intelligence requests. |
| Property-based smoke development | 100 101 | Moves beyond smoke-assisted punching. His domain infiltrates pirates’ bodies, hardens inside openings, and restrains them for coordinated Marine attacks. |
| Captain; improved Observation Haki | 127 | Commands a G-5 patrol and anticipates Jack’s Haki-coated attacks, transforming before contact. Atlas remarks on his improved perception, although his strength and Armament remain insufficient against Jack. |
| Further gains from combat | 224 | Has benefited from the earlier battle involving Doflamingo, but his improvement lags behind Enel’s. Enel catches him with a Haki-coated kick during sparring. |
Background / History
Loguetown
Smoker begins his Marine career as a handyman, just as Atlas does. The two are the same age, although Atlas repeatedly calls him a “little brat.” Colonel Randall plans to send them to Headquarters together and asks Atlas to look after the weaker Smoker 3.
Initially eager to prove himself, Smoker asks to accompany Atlas against the Philoc Pirates. Atlas refuses because he is too weak and because the mission is personal 4.
His discovery of the Smoke-Smoke Fruit changes his standing at the base. Pursuit missions become easy, his peers cannot defeat him, and even Randall cannot strike his elemental body. This success encourages him to neglect physical training and challenge Atlas upon Atlas’s return 10.
Atlas defeats him by exhausting his stamina rather than overcoming his Logia intangibility. The loss forces Smoker to reconsider his reliance on the fruit. With Randall supporting Atlas’s criticism, he begins demanding training advice and steadily improves his endurance 10 11 12.
Marine Recruit Camp
Garp escorts Smoker and Atlas to Marineford. Smoker enthusiastically questions Garp about capturing Roger until the vice admiral silences him with a punch to the head 13.
At the Recruit Camp, Smoker shares a dormitory with Atlas, Rosinante, and Grus. He becomes one of the class’s three “monster rookies,” alongside Atlas and Hina, but is surprised by the distinction because repeated defeats by Atlas have undermined his confidence 14 15.
After Atlas defeats seven recruits while restricting herself to Shave and Iron Body, Shuzo warns them against trying to master all six techniques simultaneously. Smoker subsequently focuses on three techniques suited to his fighting style and wins his year-end match against Hina 17 19.
His graduation evaluation suffers because he openly disobeys orders during the trial. His later explanation is consistent with that behavior: he refuses to follow superiors whose beliefs conflict with his own justice 48 56.
Appearance
- Hair: White or silver-white; later described as short 10 138 191.
- Build: Muscular, with a visibly improved physique after years of combining physical training with his Devil Fruit 12 57.
- Clothing: Often wears an open shirt that exposes his chest 191 229.
- Distinguishing habit: Frequently carries or smokes cigarettes and cigars, including during combat 12 100 144.
Personality
Smoker is proud, competitive, and initially susceptible to the prestige of being a Logia user. His first challenge against Atlas is partly an attempt to show off his new power to someone he admires. Although defeat leaves him resentful and discouraged, he eventually accepts the criticism and pursues demanding physical training 10 12.
His guiding principle develops into protecting civilians and fighting evil. He is willing to talk back to superiors rather than abandon that conviction, even when doing so slows his promotion. He explicitly credits Atlas with teaching him to remain true to his own justice 48 56.
Atlas’s influence leaves him more youthful and good-natured than his original-timeline counterpart. He can be bashful, easily embarrassed, and receptive to friendly teasing, though Enel’s provocations reliably bring out his stubbornness 144 176 182.
He also recognizes practical limits. After recovering from Katakuri’s Conqueror’s Haki, he rejects a proposed arrest because the available Marines cannot defeat him. Later, despite his rivalry with Enel, he worries about leaving Enel to face an enemy alone 107 179.
Abilities & Skills
Smoke-Smoke Fruit
- Elemental transformation: Converts all or part of his body into smoke to evade attacks. Without Armament Haki, Randall cannot strike his true body 10.
- Controlled solidity: Can make his generated smoke soft or hard, allowing it to obstruct airways, enclose targets, and form defensive structures 101.
- Smoke-assisted movement: Uses smoke around his limbs like thrusters to propel himself toward an opponent 57 127.
- Projectile interception: Absorbs and crushes a cannonball before it reaches his patrol ship 126.
- Physical composition: His smoke consists of solid particles, unlike Yermak’s cloud-mist of water vapor and ice crystals 40.
Named Smoke Techniques
- Smoke: White Fist — Launches fists through streams of smoke. Atlas can disperse the attacks with stronger punches 10.
- Smoke: White Fist: Finger Pistol — Combines a projected fist with Finger Pistol for a piercing attack 19.
- Smoke: White Domain — Covers a wide area in dense smoke, obscuring vision, irritating the eyes, and concealing attacks. Observation Haki allows Atlas to counter it 10.
- Smoke: White Snake — Wraps snake-shaped smoke around an opponent’s limbs and torso. Atlas tears free through physical strength 17.
- Smoke: White Wall — Raises a smoke barrier. It fails against Atlas’s charge but is also used to intercept Enel’s lightning attack 17 176.
- White Gale: Domain — Fills an enclosed battlefield with smoke that enters exposed bodily openings and hardens. Smoker also hardens the surrounding smoke to restrain targets while opening passages for allied Marines 100 101.
- White Vine — Forms spiraling smoke columns to pin an opponent. Jack breaks the restraint almost immediately 127.
Observation Haki
- Awakens after years of effort, following Zephyr’s advice that Observation Haki is especially important for Logia users 57.
- Allows him to anticipate attacks and transform the threatened body part before a Haki-coated strike lands 127.
- Requires composure: boasting leaves him open to Atlas’s counterattack, while shock at Jack’s mammoth transformation precedes a devastating hit 57 128.
- Improves noticeably by the G-5 patrol battle, though it does not compensate fully for Jack’s superior strength 127.
Armament Haki
- Has awakened by the time of his promotion following the Sabaody operations, but initially works only intermittently 80.
- Remains limited during the fight with Jack, restricting Smoker’s ability to damage the physically stronger pirate 127.
Six Powers and Physical Conditioning
- Prioritizes Finger Pistol, Shave, and Iron Body instead of spreading his effort across all six techniques 19.
- Uses Shave effectively enough to hold a slight speed advantage over Hina during their assessment 19.
- Builds stamina through Atlas’s conditioning program, including a harsh rope-assisted underwater regimen intended to prepare him for seawater and Seastone weakness 12.
- Combines hand-to-hand fighting with smoke powers over several years, rather than relying exclusively on elemental transformation 57.
Limitations
- Repeated full-body transformations and large smoke domains consume stamina. Atlas exploits this weakness in their first documented spar 10.
- Remains vulnerable to seawater as a Devil Fruit user; he reminds Atlas of this when asked to catch Sea Kings 57.
- Smoke restraints can be broken by opponents with overwhelming physical strength 17 127.
- His tavern opponents lack Observation Haki, leaving them unable to track Marines moving through his domain; the technique’s success is not demonstrated against equally perceptive enemies 101.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Seastone jitte — Secretly incorporates Seastone into a jitte to surprise Enel. The attempted trick is interrupted by the appearance of the enormous Lantern Fish 225.
- Cigarettes and cigars — A longstanding habit. Atlas gives him rare World Government-issued cigars from the monthly supply allocated to a Candidate Admiral 12 144.
- Binoculars — Uses them to observe the Victor Pirates’ fleet and detect its ships closing ranks 229.
Relationships
- Kanos Atlas — Same-age friend, mentor, and eventual commanding officer. Atlas redirects his training, encourages him to define his own justice, and later recruits him into the command. Smoker remains admiring but nervous about their sparring sessions 3 12 56 57.
- Colonel Randall — Former superior at Loguetown. Recognizes his potential, supports Atlas’s correction of his fruit dependence, and takes pride in his later career 3 11 59.
- Wright — Former Loguetown colleague who directs the returning Atlas toward Smoker and later joins their homecoming meal 9 59.
- Zephyr — Recruit Camp instructor and source of his advice on Observation Haki 14 57.
- Hina — Fellow monster rookie and training rival. They know one another’s habits well; Smoker defeats her in the year-end assessment, but she later outranks him 15 19 56.
- Rosinante — Dormitory companion. Atlas expects Rosinante’s death would leave Smoker heartbroken 14 24.
- Kyros — Fellow subordinate and frequent operational partner. They coordinate the tavern battle in Chris Kingdom and are jointly protected from Hancock by Issho 101 144.
- Enel — Fellow Logia user and persistent rival. Their challenges and arguments become routine aboard the White Hou. Smoker nevertheless shows concern for Enel’s safety 176 179 205 225.
- Luffy — Treats him with particular fondness and frequently teases him. Luffy later calls him “Uncle Smoker,” much to his bewilderment 68 230.
- Ace and Sabo — Travels with the brothers and helps supervise their training. Their theft of his liquor and food exasperates him 68.
- Issho — Familiar traveling companion who intervenes when Hancock attacks Smoker and Kyros at Marineford 144.
- Vergo — Fellow officer assigned to Atlas’s command. They receive joint orders to help restore order in Sabaody 56 77.

- Encounters the three brothers training at Headquarters, where Luffy’s “Uncle Smoker” greeting catches him completely off guard 230.
Notable Quotes
“Protect civilians. Fight evil.” 56
“That's because I don't share their beliefs. You taught me this yourself, Atlas: you have to stay true to your sense of justice!” 56
“Pointless. Even if you stop breathing, my smoke can enter through any opening exposed to the air. Holding your breath only delays your death a little!” 101
Trivia
- His rank is inconsistent in the supplied text: Chapter 99 calls him a Lieutenant Colonel, Chapter 100 calls him a Lieutenant Commander, and Chapter 127 identifies him as a Captain. No intervening demotion is described 99 100 127.
- Ace steals Smoker’s hidden liquor for the brothers’ sake-sharing ceremony 68.
- His tobacco obsession is explicitly noted, but the suggestion that it might be connected to his Devil Fruit is left unresolved 144.
- Atlas attributes his comparatively cheerful personality to the altered course of his life, contrasting him with the scowling Smoker of the original timeline 144.
