"Then... let's begin!"
Obito took a deep breath and cast a Genjutsu on himself.
His consciousness was dragged into a scene and trapped there.
He would be forced to watch everything that happened next.
There it was.
Sheer cliffs beneath a blood moon.
In the suffocating darkness, masked figures stood everywhere.
They hid in the night, blades in hand.
They stared impassively at the two boys.
As though they were looking at two dead men.
Shing!
Blades slid from their sheaths.
The figures lunged at the boys like ghosts.
Chirrrp!
A piercing birdcall rang out.
The silver-haired boy charged an enemy, lightning gathered in his hand.
But the lightning did not pierce the enemy as he had expected.
For some reason, it plunged into his companion's chest instead.
Blood stained the girl's chest, blooming into a lurid flower.
"Rin!"
The girl fell with a smile on her face.
It felt as though flames were scorching both boys' hearts!
"Aaaaaah!"
Back in reality.
Obito let out a hysterical, guttural cry.
Because right now, he was Obito.
He was the protagonist of this tragedy.
The girl he loved had been stabbed through the heart by his closest friend!
No outsider could possibly understand how real it felt.
Grief and despair, rage and confusion...
Negative emotions of every kind surged endlessly from deep within him.
They battered his soul and consciousness.
Boom!
The power dormant in his mind was stirred.
It burst forth in a torrent and flooded into his eyes.
Obito opened his eyes again.
Two Tomoe slowly revolved in his blood-red eyes.
"It worked..."
Obito murmured, but he felt no joy at his success.
The Genjutsu had amplified his emotions.
He was still lost in grief over Rin's "death."
A long while passed.
He let out a long breath and shook off the gloom in his heart.
"Phew. Two Tomoe at last. Not bad."
"But this method would probably only work once. If I hadn't already briefly awakened the Two Tomoe..."
"A 'Genjutsu' whose ending I already know wouldn't hit nearly as hard."
Obito wiped the fine sweat from his forehead.
He lay down on his little bed and drifted peacefully off to sleep.
The next day.
Obito got up full of energy.
He had always been lively and cheerful.
Yesterday's troubles were already behind him.
"Hmm. Minato-sensei and the others probably won't be back. What should I do today?"
"Come to think of it, I haven't set myself any little goals lately."
With that thought.
He tentatively spoke up.
"Hey, System, how about giving me a choice?"
The system: "...Ding!"
[Option One: Complete one hundred D-rank Missions within six months. Reward: Patience +1.] [Option Two: Kill twenty Chunin within six months. Reward: Taijutsu improvement (Jonin-level).] [Option Three: Complete thirty C-rank Missions within six months. Reward: Labor Is the Most Glorious BGM.] [Labor Is the Most Glorious BGM: While your BGM plays, no one can outgrind you. When your stamina runs out, instantly recover 20% of your maximum stamina.] (This effect can only trigger once per day!)
"What the hell is Patience +1..."
Obito ignored option one and read on.
"Kill twenty Chunin? Heh heh heh..." Obito grinned wickedly.
"If I kill everyone from my year, I'll be halfway done!"
"And then everyone from my year will be a Genin. Let's see who laughs at me then!"
Of course.
Obito was only joking.
There was no way he would turn on the people dearest to him, his brothers in all but blood.
Not for such a tiny reward.
"I'll go with option three."
"If this buff kicks in during an evenly matched fight, it'll be almost like having half an extra life."
"And option three is a little easier than option two. Six months should be plenty of time."
Obito quickly made up his mind.
In his mind, he furiously punched in threes: 33333!
Once Minato-sensei and the others returned.
He would keep taking missions with them!
Some time later.
Minato noticed something surprising.
His student Obito seemed like a different person.
He had begun actively asking the team to take more missions.
And during missions, no one worked harder than he did.
How to put it?
A perfectly good grind machine had somehow grown into the shape of a person.
Minato was delighted by the change in Obito.
Obito has finally grown up.
All those earnest lessons I gave him weren't for nothing.
Minato looked at Obito beside him and said with a gentle smile.
"Obito, why don't you tell us what you think?"
The four of them were currently carrying out a C-rank Mission.
Their assignment was:
Capture a fugitive from the Land of Fire and extract information from him.
They had followed his trail and finally pinned down his location.
If their information was right.
The man was hiding in the cave before them!
(If I push a little harder, I might get another chapter out...)
