Appearance

Goblins are small enough that even Yanxi, described as petite, appears extremely tall to a young Goblin 37. Their distinguishing features include:

• Green coloration: Dean observes that even a Goblin’s soul is green 36.
• Tusks: A Goblin’s left fang is accepted as proof of a kill by the Adventurers’ Guild 23.
• Yellowish-brown eyes: Goblins affected by War Frenzy develop blood-red eyes, which return to yellowish-brown when the spell is dispelled 44 45.

Society and Magic

• Tribal leadership: The shaman is the tribe’s most important member. Shamans are rare and generally follow a single line of succession 31 32.
• Ordinary Goblins: Adults are generally compared in intelligence to human children of five or six and do not readily obey orders 30.
• Goblin Elites: Some reach intelligence comparable to a child of seven or eight. One scarred Elite encountered by Kana’s Squad was assessed as approaching the second rank 21 30.
• Shamans: They serve a mage-like role despite Goblins’ limited magical aptitude. The old shaman used detection magic and prepared a complex summoning array with magical materials 31 34.
• Shaman succession: The old shaman’s young successor could cast Healing Technique, an unusual achievement for an underage Goblin 36 37.

Items and Sacred Objects

• Goblin Scepter — A wooden staff with a silver sphere, passed down through generations of shamans. It developed a simple consciousness, supports Goblin users in manipulating magic, and rejects non-Goblins 36 37.
• Goblin statue — A shrine object shaped over more than a dozen generations of shamans. It became a Totem Spirit before Dean sacrificed it during the young shaman’s reincarnation 38 39.
• Soul Stone — Carried by the old shaman’s party and used as a temporary vessel for the soul summoned through the Giant Spirit Summoning Array 31 34.

History

Goblins near a farm drew Kana’s Squad into an ambush that killed two Goblins and crippled a Goblin Elite. Dean detected a much larger force approaching, and the squad fled to warn Blue Town 20 21 22. The Adventurers’ Guild subsequently offered one silver coin for proof of each adult Goblin killed 25.

The tribe’s organized attacks surprised the adventurers, since Goblins ordinarily resist taking orders. Fighting spread through the Magic Beast Forest, where Kana’s Squad followed the old shaman’s party to a canyon nest 30 31 32. There, the shaman used a Soul Stone and magical materials to summon a Giant. Elderly and weak Goblins sacrificed their souls, while blood taken from the tribe helped give the Giant a body 34 35. The old shaman then transferred his soul into that body and led most of the tribe toward Blue Town, leaving a young successor with the Goblin Scepter 36.

Kana’s Squad killed the young shaman at the tribe’s temple. Dean reincarnated him as the Lich Doge, sacrificing the Goblin statue in the process 37 39. At Blue Town, Doge confronted his former mentor. When negotiations failed, the old shaman cast War Frenzy over the Goblin fighters; Doge dispelled it and directed the surviving Goblins back into the forest. The souls taken for the summoning, including the old shaman’s, entered the Goblin Scepter 43 44 45.

Guildmaster Rukta declared the crisis over the following day. He said the weakened tribe would be unable to produce another dangerous shaman for decades, possibly a century, ending the Goblin uprisings that had threatened Blue Town roughly once every ten years 45.
