Appearance
Stantler initially resembles a brown deer with conspicuous ring-shaped antlers. Its evolution changes its coat to gray-white and adds a thick white beard 27 326.
- Stantler form: Two beige body markings, black spherical features within its antlers, and a tufted tail 27.
- Wyrdeer form: White fur on the lower legs, with two prominent bumps on each leg 326.
Personality
Stantler is intelligent, lazy, and unusually skilled at manipulating others. It pretends to exercise whenever Bai Shi checks on it, flatters Staravia to lower its guard, and uses coaxing and intimidation to keep Dunsparce from reporting its misconduct. When forced into battle training, it deliberately takes a hit and feigns defeat 28.
Its resistance is selective rather than an inability to learn. It willingly practices Confusion once physical conditioning is reduced, learns Agility after only a few observations, and rapidly picks up Roar. It conceals progress because revealing stronger abilities usually means more training or more dangerous battles 28 38 173.
Food, praise, and promises of fewer battles are effective incentives. Stantler remains with Bai Shi because he treats it kindly, provides unusual foods, and has a similarly pragmatic, scheming personality. Although it avoids exertion, insults can provoke its pride: Paul’s dismissal turns a reluctant appearance into a determined victory over Hariyama 28 87 117.
Stantler’s loyalty is clearest when Bai Shi is in danger. It may reject his orders, but repeatedly chooses to protect him—including carrying him away against his wishes. Its eventual evolution follows the same pattern: it abandons its preferred inactivity when hiding is no longer an option 42 63 143 326.
Abilities & Skills
Confusion and Psychic
Psychic control is Stantler’s principal strength. Confusion serves both practical and combat purposes, while Psychic can immobilize powerful opponents and repeatedly slam them into the ground 34 63 117.
- Battlefield control: Stops Geodude’s Rollout, redirects thrown rocks, and restrains opponents 34.
- Heavy lifting: Raises Paul’s Hariyama—nearly 250 kilograms—and defeats it through repeated ground impacts 117.
- Training assistance: Lifts, rotates, and launches Dunsparce during Drill Run practice 63.
- Rescue and transport: Moves Bai Shi and injured Pokémon onto its back; later breaks out of Team Galactic’s base with its Trainer 42 143.
- Close-range advantage: Its Psychic becomes more powerful as the target approaches, which Bai Shi exploits against Hariyama 117.
- Limits: Before evolving, it explicitly considers restraining Regigigas beyond its capabilities. Sustained psychic exertion can leave it physically helpless 123.
Psychic Sensing and Observation
Stantler uses Confusion to survey its surroundings, locate targets, and monitor activity without moving extensively 29 87 94.
- Locates underground gemstone deposits during Bai Shi’s Mega Stone search 87.
- Monitors training areas and, later, the entire Manor 94 171.
- Finds an Alomomola beneath the water during a fishing competition 208.
- Helps examine surveillance recordings; its sharp senses and memory aid the search for a jewelry thief 29.
- Notices something unusual about a disguised “Durant” and pulls it out of the ground, exposing Hisuian Zorua 217 218.
Hypnosis and Move Restriction
Stantler uses disabling techniques to subdue threats and control difficult trainees 41 171 196.
- Hypnosis: Puts hunters and an attempted thief to sleep; also forces an overworked Zangoose to rest 41 87 171.
- Confuse Ray: Releases an eerie light intended to confuse opponents. Geodude evades it, while Hariyama disperses it with Force Palm 34 117.
- Imprison: Prevents an opponent from using moves Stantler also knows. It develops the technique while managing Pokémon it has coached 196.
Defensive Techniques
Stantler possesses defensive moves that it initially conceals from Bai Shi 167.
- Barrier Rush: Used in its escape from Team Galactic; associated with its potential evolution into Wyrdeer 143 144.
- Light Screen and Reflect: Confirmed by Pokédex scan, though their individual acquisition and use are not shown 167.
- Psychic barrier: Blocks Heatran’s Magma Storm with a transparent barrier, making the defense appear easier than Golurk’s attempt 272.
Mobility and Other Moves
| Move | Documented use or knowledge |
|---|---|
| Agility | Learned secretly; used to escape danger and dodge Hariyama’s Force Palm 38 42 117. |
| Calm Mind | Known before Bai Shi’s Pokédex scan; Stantler regards it as a convenient way to continue psychic training 164 167. |
| Energy Ball | Fired at Hariyama, which destroys the projectile with Arm Thrust 117. |
| Tackle and Stomp | Demonstrated during its initial move assessment 28. |
| Roar | Rapidly learned and then taught to Manectric 173. |
Sap Sipper
Bai Shi identifies Sap Sipper after observing that Grass-type moves do not affect Stantler during testing 31.
- Its Ability after evolving into Wyrdeer is not established in the supplied account.
Teaching and Team Management
Stantler becomes Bai Shi’s “special instructor,” combining rapid learning with precise psychic supervision 173.
- Gives Electrike guidance during Agility training, accelerating its progress 85.
- Teaches Manectric Roar and brings Litleo close to mastering it 173.
- Enforces Shiny Ariados’s training, partly because a stronger teammate could reduce its own battle assignments 110.
- Maintains order among the Manor’s returning Pokémon and offers pointers once they behave 191.
- Cares reliably for Zorua and Cubchoo without passing on its laziness; they return knowing Nasty Plot and Icy Wind 258.
- Guides Zigzagoon through steady foundational training 291.
Background / History
Capture and Early Training
Bai Shi finds Stantler while crossing the Forest of Bewilderment on the way to Jubilife City. Interested in its potential to evolve into the Psychic-type Wyrdeer, he sends Staravia ahead and keeps Dunsparce underground as backup. Stantler is grazing alone after leaving its companions and immediately tries to flee when approached 27.
It initially controls the encounter, incapacitating Staravia and stopping Dunsparce’s Mud-Slap. Once Staravia recovers, the two attack from opposite directions: Quick Attack disrupts Stantler’s control, Dunsparce’s Rollout knocks it down, and Wing Attack renders it unconscious. Bai Shi captures it in a Poké Ball 27.
Training exposes the difference between Stantler’s apparent cooperation and its actual willingness to work. Supervision, scolding, and forced sparring all fail. Bai Shi finally reduces physical conditioning and concentrates on Confusion, producing genuine progress and teaching him to account for a Pokémon’s temperament 28.
Selective Battler and Protector
At Oreburgh Gym, Stantler volunteers to fight because it expects the opening opponent to be weaker. It defeats Geodude by turning its attacks against it, then deliberately lets its match against Onix end after deciding it has done enough. Bai Shi subsequently considers using it against an opening opponent and recalling it before it can throw another round 34 35 37.
Outside formal matches, it is more dependable. It rescues Bai Shi and Staravia from Ursaring, helps defeat Pokémon Hunters, and overpowers Shiny Ariados when the latter attempts to immobilize its Trainer. That encounter exposes its concealed Psychic 41 42 81 108.
Its opening victory over Paul’s Hariyama demonstrates how dangerous it can be when properly motivated. Bai Shi promises a week without training, then lures Hariyama close before revealing Psychic. Stantler’s win contributes to Bai Shi’s eventual victory in the best-of-three match 117 118.
Hidden Strength and Refusal to Evolve
Stantler’s power does not eliminate its endurance problem. After the confrontation with Regigigas, it is genuinely exhausted and privately acknowledges that avoiding exercise has left it with much poorer stamina than Staraptor and Zangoose 123.
Bai Shi later suspects it already knows Psyshield Bash and is suppressing evolution to avoid further battle assignments. Stantler gives him only an eye roll. After escaping Team Galactic’s base, it explicitly refuses to evolve until every other teammate becomes stronger than it, fearing that evolution would encourage Bai Shi to demand even more dangerous fights 127 143 144.
Manor Caretaker and Instructor
Before traveling to Unova, Bai Shi leaves Stantler in charge of his Manor and the Ariados. Stantler readily accepts a home with plentiful food and drink, although Bai Shi insists it maintain training, contact him during emergencies, and not abandon the others 164.
Delegated training initially proves troublesome. Zangoose ignores Stantler’s warnings about overwork and repeatedly fights it; struggling against its psychic restraints unexpectedly teaches Zangoose Strength. Bai Shi mistakes that result for deliberate coaching, but Stantler subsequently demonstrates genuine teaching talent by learning and passing on Roar 171 173.
When Bai Shi adopts rotating teams, Stantler becomes the authority at home. It defeats an insubordinate Staraptor twice, persuading the other Pokémon to behave. Its supervision allows Bai Shi to travel with newer partners while established teammates continue developing at the Manor 191 196.
Emergency Intervention and Evolution
Despite its preference for staying home, Stantler remains a last-resort combatant. It restrains the colossal Golurk after the rest of Bai Shi’s team is overwhelmed, creating the opening for a Heavy Ball capture. Later, it blocks Heatran’s Magma Storm when Golurk is badly damaged 183 272.
During the battle against the giant stone threatening Anistar City, Stantler initially rejects the idea of holding it still. Bai Shi convinces it that the threat cannot be escaped if the stone reaches the sundial. Stantler finally evolves into Wyrdeer and halts the stone with Psychic, allowing Ash, Greninja, and Alain to rescue Gogoat. The exertion causes it to collapse from exhaustion 326.
Equipment / Items
- Poké Ball — Used by Bai Shi to capture and recall it; Stantler can also emerge without being called 27 34.
- Tablet and social media account — Provided to maintain contact with Bai Shi while supervising the Manor 191.
- Home transfer system — Learns to operate the device through psychic control, enabling communication and transfers between Bai Shi and the Manor 162 164.
Relationships
- Bai Shi — Trainer and frequent opponent in a battle of wills. Food and negotiated workloads sustain their cooperation; Stantler repeatedly protects him despite disobeying reckless commands 28 42 143.
- Staravia / Staraptor — Initially manipulates its pride through flattery. Later defeats Staraptor twice when it challenges Stantler’s authority at the Manor 28 191.
- Dunsparce / Dudunsparce — Intimidates it into silence during early training, then helps it develop Drill Run. Dudunsparce remains frightened by Stantler’s ability to overpower Zangoose 28 63 171.
- Zangoose — Welcomes its arrival as a way to avoid battles, but clashes with its obsessive training and refusal to listen. Their confrontations inadvertently help Zangoose learn Strength 44 171.
- Electrike / Manectric — A respectful trainee who receives particular attention, benefiting from Stantler’s Agility guidance and Roar instruction 85 173.
- Shiny Ariados — First subdued while attacking Bai Shi, then placed under Stantler’s strict training supervision 108 110.
- Paul — His mockery provokes Stantler into defeating Hariyama rather than merely putting in a token effort 117.
- Zorua and Cubchoo — Cared for during Bai Shi’s Vertress Conference participation; both make progress without adopting Stantler’s slacking habits 258.
