Background / History
Before its capture, Zangoose lived as a solitary Seviper hunter. It had defeated several Seviper using its claw-focused fighting style, reinforcing its belief that sharper claws were the answer to any difficult opponent 44.
Bai Shi encountered it during a brutal fight with a stronger Seviper. When Seviper prepared to finish the exhausted Zangoose, Bai Shi intervened with Stantler, Staravia, and Dunsparce. Zangoose still tried to pursue its fleeing opponent, then resisted medical treatment until Stantler restrained it. Bai Shi treated its wounds and captured it after it lost consciousness, judging its endurance and fighting ability sufficient for immediate use despite it being weaker than his ideal recruit 43.
Zangoose initially resented losing its freedom. It provisionally accepted Bai Shi only after he promised to send it out first against Trainers with Seviper, retaining the intention to escape if that promise proved false. Its trust developed after supervised battles with Staravia exposed the shortcomings of its fighting style and demonstrated the value of Bai Shi’s training 44 45.
During Bai Shi’s Unova travels, Zangoose periodically returned to the Twinleaf manor for training under Stantler’s supervision. Its refusal to rest caused repeated clashes with Stantler; Bai Shi later mistook the resulting acquisition of Strength for evidence of successful coaching 171.
Appearance
- Scarlet eyes — described as blazing with murderous intent when angered during its first battle with Staravia 45.
- Sharp claws — its original weapons and the basis of its early moveset 44.
- Characteristic rushing stance — holds its left paw forward and its right paw behind its body before executing its high-speed finishing attacks 49 205.
Personality
Zangoose is proud, aggressive, and intensely independent. Even badly wounded, it rejects a stranger’s help and attempts to continue hunting Seviper. After capture, it dismisses Staravia’s welcome and quietly resists training because it does not believe Bai Shi’s methods will make it stronger 43 44.
Its stubbornness becomes productive once Bai Shi earns its trust. It trains seriously, learns quickly, and continues fighting through severe punishment. Against Nando’s Kricketune, Bai Shi’s encouragement helps it rise after both Pokémon collapse, securing its first victory since joining the team 45 48.
Zangoose’s dedication can become dangerous overtraining. It increases its workload rather than be outdone by newcomers and later trains almost to exhaustion at the manor. Its dislike of Stantler prevents it from accepting warnings to rest, forcing Stantler to intervene with Psychic and Hypnosis 139 171.
Abilities & Skills
Immunity
Immunity prevents poisoning and severe poisoning. Bai Shi first suspects the Ability because Zangoose survives its prolonged encounter with Seviper without showing signs of poisoning 43.
- Allows it to charge through Scolipede’s Toxic without becoming poisoned 205.
- Does not protect it from unrelated conditions: Abomasnow’s Blizzard freezes it during the Snowpoint Gym battle 114.
- Does not make it invulnerable to a Poison-type opponent’s other attacks; Garbodor defeats it with Body Slam and Thunderbolt 205.
Claw Combat
Zangoose’s original moveset consists entirely of claw attacks and Hone Claws. Bai Shi identifies this specialization as both a strength and a tactical vulnerability 44 49.
- Scratch, Fury Cutter, Slash, and Crush Claw provide its initial close-range offense 44.
- Hone Claws strengthens its attacks and improves accuracy 49.
- It can catch an opponent’s striking hand and retaliate with its free claw, as demonstrated against Ash’s Monferno 130.
- Before broadening its moveset, restraining its claws could neutralize most of its offensive capability 49.
High-Speed Combination Attacks
Bai Shi develops these techniques by shortening transitions between existing moves rather than requiring Zangoose to perform them simultaneously 49.
- High-Speed Hone Claws: switches from acceleration into claw sharpening, producing both effects in a brief interval. The initial version loses a little speed during the transition 49.
- High-Speed Crush Claw: links Agility, Hone Claws, and Crush Claw into a three-stage burst attack. During its development, Zangoose shatters a nearly two-meter-tall boulder with the strengthened strike 49.
- High-Speed Focus Punch: builds on Zangoose’s ability to use Hone Claws while charging Focus Punch, then delivers the charged blow after a rapid approach 127 205.
- Heavy defenses and prepared counters can stop these techniques. Lairon survives High-Speed Crush Claw, while Drayden’s Druddigon catches High-Speed Focus Punch head-on with Dragon Claw 78 232.
Elemental Punches and Double Casting
Zangoose has exceptional aptitude for Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, and Ice Punch, collectively called its “Farmer’s Three Punches.” Its progress with these attacks far exceeds its progress with Swift 85 104 105.
- Heavenly Frost Fist: projects Ice Punch’s energy outward, initially reaching one meter and leaving a thin layer of frost on a struck target 104.
- Projected elemental punches: extends the same method to Fire Punch and Thunder Punch; all three reach five meters after further training 105.
- Double casting: launches two fist projections simultaneously, allowing barrages that overwhelm an opponent’s ability to block individual attacks 118.
- Precision targeting: double Ice Punch topples Paul’s Ursaring by striking its feet, creating an opening for Crush Claw 118.
- The projections can be intercepted or weakened. Palmer’s Sandstorm reduces the icy fists to less than half their original strength, while Sceptile cuts through fiery projections with Leaf Blade 131 251.
Mobility and Defense
- Agility: supports rapid approaches and evasive movement; Zangoose uses it to escape Kricketune’s Sing and repeatedly dodge Onix’s Dragon Pulse 48 95.
- Dig: avoids attacks such as Spore and Discharge while setting up underground approaches 103 241.
- Detect: tracks an incoming attack’s path and enables narrowly timed evasions, including against Thunderbolt and Hyper Beam 205 241.
- Spinning Crush Claw: an improvised Counter Shield deflects Rhyperior’s Stone Edge, but Rock Wrecker breaks through it by force 131.
- Limits: Sand Tomb restricts its mobility, Earthquake reaches it underground, and Mienshao’s Feint bypasses Detect 95 131 261.
Tactical Support and Other Attacks
- Taunt: interrupts Pain Split, prevents Swords Dance setup, and provokes opponents into attacks that create openings 232 238 261.
- Close Combat: delivers a full-body barrage and becomes a frequent finisher against strong opponents 205 232 241.
- Strength: acquired through struggling against Stantler’s psychic restraints rather than direct instruction 171.
- Swift: initially difficult to learn and weak even after acquisition, although it later blocks Sceptile’s Bullet Seed in the Vertress Conference final 65 85 251.
- Move instruction: repeatedly demonstrates Close Combat until Ishimaru’s Breloom learns it; Bai Shi also transfers Zangoose from home to support Drake’s Buizel’s Ice Punch training 152 269.
Z-Moves
Under Hala’s guidance, Zangoose becomes the first member of Bai Shi’s team to master a Z-Move 301.
- Masters All-Out Pummeling with Bai Shi, then learns the available Normal- and Electric-type Z-Moves 301.
- Finishes that training period with three Z-Moves, compared with two each for Staraptor and Manectric 301.
- Z-Moves consume considerable stamina from both Pokémon and Trainer and are generally limited to one use per official match 301.
Relationships
- Bai Shi — Trainer. Their partnership begins with an involuntary capture and conditional cooperation, then develops into trust through measurable training results and encouragement 43 44 45 48.
- Staravia / Staraptor — Teammate and rival. Zangoose rejects its self-appointed “big brother” role; supervised battles ease their hostility, though Zangoose continues to dislike it 44 45 171.
- Stantler — Teammate and occasional supervisor. Zangoose resents its laziness and refuses its advice. Repeated conflicts inadvertently produce Strength, and learning Taunt later gives Zangoose a chance to challenge its control 171 196.
- Dunsparce / Dudunsparce — Teammate. Initially intimidated by Zangoose’s hostility; later shares a manor training stay and becomes frightened after seeing Stantler overpower it 44 171.
- Electrike — Training partner. Zangoose supplies Thunder Punch attacks for Lightning Rod and High-Speed Charge practice, improving its own punch in the process 83.
- Seviper — Its defining enemy and hunting obsession. Fighting Seviper motivates its provisional acceptance of Bai Shi; it later defeats Kamiya’s Seviper during a rescue at Mt. Coronet 44 69.
- Ishimaru’s Machoke and Breloom — Training partners. Machoke teaches Zangoose Detect, while Zangoose teaches Breloom Close Combat 152.
- Hala — Z-Move mentor. His guidance helps Zangoose quickly master All-Out Pummeling 301.

Trivia
- Bai Shi’s High-Speed Crush Claw design draws inspiration from a dragging-blade slash from his previous life; Heavenly Frost Fist is inspired by a martial-arts comic 49 104.
- Its unusually fast progress with punches briefly makes Bai Shi wonder whether it has Iron Fist or Tough Claws rather than Immunity. This is speculation, not a change of Ability 85.
- Bai Shi considers using Zangoose’s training as a model for Hisuian Zorua because both can use Hone Claws 218.
- Ash’s Chimchar fears Zangoose because of an earlier wild Zangoose encounter, not because Bai Shi’s Zangoose is identified as the original attacker. The Zangoose frightening Chimchar during Paul’s tournament match is also a separate opponent 56 130.
