Background / History
Stantler brought Sealeo to Bai Shi, who chose to catch it despite its slow reactions. It treated the offered Net Ball as a toy, spinning and batting it until Bai Shi caught it directly 107. Bai Shi subsequently focused its training on conditioning and its existing moves; battles over stolen food helped draw out its fighting spirit 110.
At Nacrene Gym, Lillipup’s Roar forced Sealeo into battle, and Watchog’s Mean Look prevented Bai Shi from recalling it. Sealeo ignored his orders but retaliated after taking Thunderbolt, defeating Watchog with Water Gun and Body Slam. It evolved into Walrein immediately afterward, then obeyed Bai Shi’s Blizzard and Water Gun commands to defeat Lillipup and secure the Basic Badge 172 173.
Bai Shi subsequently adjusted his fast-offense approach to suit Walrein’s size and preference for direct clashes. He trained it as a durable, heavy-hitting battler and incorporated it into plans for a Rain Team 174. Walrein later became a regular choice against powerful opponents, defeating Drayden’s Haxorus with Ice Armor, Avalanche, and Blizzard, though Druddigon knocked it out in the same Gym match 231.
Appearance
Sealeo was a blue-and-white sea lion Pokémon nearly a meter long, with short white tusks and thick whiskers 107. Evolution made Walrein larger and more fearsome 172.
- Tusks: Two long white tusks became its most intimidating feature 172.
- Build: Weighed over 150 kilograms after evolving, making it Bai Shi’s heaviest Pokémon at the time 174.
- Defense: Its thick hide lets it endure attacks while waiting for opponents to come within reach 183 186.
Personality
As Sealeo, Walrein was placid, playful, and slow to understand Bai Shi’s intentions. It could ignore commands yet fight independently when angered 107 172. After evolving, it became sharper and able to handle simple tasks, though it remained proud, quick-tempered, and prone to charging head-on 174 189. Its temper generally passed quickly after a sparring match with Staraptor 174.
Abilities & Skills
Oblivious
- A Pokédex scan confirms Oblivious as Walrein’s Ability 167.
- It prevents Emboar’s Attract from affecting Walrein and lets it ignore Scrafty’s Taunt while setting up Rain Dance 235 260.
- Virgil’s Umbreon receives Oblivious through Skill Swap; its slowed reactions leave it open to Walrein’s Blizzard 244.
Ice Armor and Counterattacks
- Walrein uses Ice Shard to form and swallow a large piece of ice, encasing itself in crystalline armor. The technique helps it survive powerful charges, but Druddigon’s Flash Cannon shatters it 227 231.
- Bai Shi pairs the armor with Avalanche, letting Walrein withstand a hit and counter while its opponent is exposed 227 231 268.
- Its Blizzard can strike evasive opponents across a wide area and has been used at point-blank range after Walrein traps a foe with Ice Fang 186 231 245.
Water and Rain Tactics
- Hydro Pump can block incoming attacks or flush an opponent out of a tunnel 181 227 268.
- Rain Dance strengthens its Water-type offense; a rain-boosted Hydro Pump knocks out Marshal’s Scrafty 260.
- Aqua Tail provides a close-range follow-up, while Crunch can hold an opponent’s limb and interrupt an attack 235 287.
Relationships

- Staraptor — Sparring rival. Their clashes begin over Staraptor’s leadership and earlier teasing, but gradually become less hostile 110 174 176.
