After Bibi Dong left, the cheers in the arena gradually died down.
"You grabbed His Holiness the Pope's hand just now?" Yan slung an arm around Xiao Ran's neck and lowered his voice, looking as if he'd seen a ghost. "Do you have a death wish?"
"Ha, my hand slipped." Xiao Ran lied without batting an eye.
"Your hand slipped that precisely?" Xie Yue said, speaking up for once.
Hu Liena smiled beside them but didn't expose him.
"Xiao Ran, that token of yours..." Hu Liena trailed off.
Xiao Ran glanced at the token in his hand and tucked it back into his pocket. "Senior Sister, now that I have this Pope Token, I'll look after you in Spirit Hall!" He pointed a thumb at himself.
Hu Liena rolled her eyes at him, though her ears turned faintly red.
Back at the Angel Class quarters, Xiao Ran shut his door.
Ding! Congratulations, host, on defeating the Radiant Light Team. You have gained combat insight, your Soul Power has risen to level 38, and you have unlocked the Cosmic Beast Fist.
"Regulos's Cosmic Beast Fist? With this, I could greatly improve my chances of beating even a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast using nothing but my fists."
Knock, knock, knock...
Early the next morning, someone knocked on his door.
"Who's calling for me this early?"
"Xiao Ran, Lord Ghost Douluo is here. He's waiting for you in the reception hall." It was Sun Chuantao. His voice held a trace of nerves.
Xiao Ran froze. "Ghost Douluo?" Ghost Douluo was one of the Titled Douluo at Bibi Dong's side. His Martial Soul was Gui Mei, and he was level 95. If a man like that had come for him personally, it had to be important.
In the reception hall, Ghost Douluo stood by the window.
"Xiao Ran." Ghost Douluo's voice was low and raspy. "His Holiness the Pope sent me to take you to the Great Enshrined."
"The Great Enshrined?"
"Lord Qian Daoliu." Ghost Douluo looked at him. "You used two beams of light in yesterday's final. The Great Enshrined sensed their power from the Elder Hall and sent me to bring you over."
Xiao Ran's heart jolted. Qian Daoliu, Qian Renxue's grandfather. He's Spirit Hall's true pillar of strength, a level 99 Limit Douluo. He sensed my power without even leaving the Elder Hall? Top-tier powerhouses are terrifying.
"All right. I'll go."
Xiao Ran followed him out. As they passed through a corridor, they ran into Hu Liena coming from the dining hall. Her expression changed when she saw them.
"Xiao Ran? What's..."
"It's fine, Senior Sister. Senior Ghost Douluo needs me for something." Xiao Ran winked at her. "Save me some breakfast."
Hu Liena opened her mouth, then stood where she was, her fingers tightening around the hem of her clothes.
The Elder Hall stood deep within Spirit City, housed in a solitary tower. Dim light filled its interior, and portraits of past popes covered the walls. Xiao Ran followed Ghost Douluo up the tower until they stopped before an enormous stone door.
Ghost Douluo pushed the door open, revealing a vast hall.
A man stood with his back to them. He wore a plain golden robe, and long silver-white hair fell over his shoulders. His figure was tall and straight.
"Great Enshrined, I've brought him." Ghost Douluo bowed his head respectfully.
Qian Daoliu slowly turned, his gaze settling on Xiao Ran.
"So you are Xiao Ran."
"At your service."
Qian Daoliu walked up to Xiao Ran and looked down at him. "Yesterday, I sensed a divine presence from the arena during the final. The light carried a power far beyond my Six-Winged Angel. And it came from you."
Xiao Ran tensed. Qian Daoliu hadn't even gone to the arena, yet he had sensed Ultraman Tiga's power from that far away. The range of a level 99 Limit Douluo's senses was beyond anything he had imagined.
"Divine? Great Enshrined, I'm not sure what you mean. That light is an ability my Martial Soul came with. I always thought it was an ordinary Soul Skill."
"You don't know?"
"I don't." Xiao Ran looked innocent. "My Martial Soul had these abilities when it awakened, but no one ever told me where they came from. Great Enshrined, what do you mean by 'divine'?"
Qian Daoliu fell silent for a few seconds, then smiled.
He didn't press the question. He merely waved a hand, and Ghost Douluo bowed and withdrew beyond the door.
"Sit."
Xiao Ran sat down. Qian Daoliu sat cross-legged opposite him and pushed a jade bottle across to him.
"Level 99 is the peak a mortal Soul Master can reach. But someone who completes the God Trial for a Godhood Inheritance can break through level 100, become a god, gain Divine Power, and inherit a Deity's mantle."
"I know your background. You're an orphan from Holy Soul Village. In any case, this is Spirit Hall's treasured Nine-Revolution Spirit-Concentrating Dew. It can greatly strengthen your mental power. At your current level, it should bring you to the threshold of a Soul Emperor."
"Great Enshrined, this must be valuable. Why give it to me?"
"Because of the power within you."
"Bibi Dong has already told me about your situation. She's decided to take you as her personal disciple."
"The light within you is more blazing and more profound than even the Angel God's."
He rose, went to a corner of the quiet chamber, and opened a hidden door. Beyond it lay a secret room with a huge mural painted on the wall.
The mural depicted a figure with six wings and a sacred sword, her entire body radiating Divine Radiance.
"Spirit Hall was founded by the First-Generation Angel God."
"Ten thousand years ago, evil and darkness shrouded the continent. The First-Generation Angel God descended into the mortal world as a Six-Winged Angel, cut down its evils, and spread light and faith. Before ascending to godhood, she left her divine mantle in the mortal world and planted the seed of the Angel Martial Soul in the Qian Family bloodline. She founded Spirit Hall to carry on the Angel God's mission."
He turned to Xiao Ran. "Every pope of Spirit Hall serves the Angel God. The Qian Family are her last bloodline descendants in the mortal world. My granddaughter Qian Renxue possesses the Six-Winged Angel Martial Soul. No one in ten thousand years has come closer to the First-Generation Angel God."
"Great Enshrined, are you saying..." Xiao Ran looked utterly confused.
"I'm saying you have the potential to become a god." Qian Daoliu returned to stand before him. "But the divine power within you seems stronger than the Angel God's. What I sensed felt more like the inheritance of another Deity."
"Xue'er is six years older than you. She's already far along the path to godhood. If you're willing, I can train the two of you together."
"Great Enshrined, when you say 'together,' do you mean that literally?" Xiao Ran's thoughts took a decidedly less innocent turn.
"Literally."
"But if you're asking whether I mean something more, I won't hide it. If you both become gods, I hope you'll become Dao Companions. Spirit Hall's future needs two gods. One isn't enough."
Xiao Ran nearly choked on his own spit.
So it really was what I thought. The realization shook Xiao Ran.
"Become... Dao Companions?" He stared wide-eyed at Qian Daoliu. "Great Enshrined, does your granddaughter know about this?"
Qian Daoliu's expression didn't change. "She will, sooner or later."
So she doesn't know. Xiao Ran grumbled inwardly. He hadn't even met Qian Renxue, and her grandfather was already arranging her marriage. If she found out, she might storm back to Spirit City to argue with Qian Daoliu.
Still... heh, heh, heh. A beautiful face immediately appeared in Xiao Ran's mind, framed by cascading golden hair, with deep eyes and skin as white as snow...
"Wow..."
