Background / History

At Nuoding Academy, Yu checks Tang San’s and Xiao Ran’s enrollment certificates and escorts them inside. He deduces that Tang San has twin martial souls from his innate full soul power and Blue Silver Grass, then accepts him as a student. Yu refuses Xiao Ran’s request, judging his level-three soul power and short-stick martial soul too weak to justify teaching him 2.

After five days of persistent requests, Yu accepts Xiao Ran as a nominal disciple and demands control over his training and soul-ring plans. Their arrangement breaks down when Xiao Ran refuses to let Yu examine his martial soul without polishing his shoes first. Yu attacks with Luo Sanpao, but Xiao Ran redirects its attack onto him. Following another confrontation in the Soul Hunting Forest, Yu reports Xiao Ran to Nuoding’s principal, who expels him 4 5 6.

Yu later takes charge of training at Shrek Academy. He initially demands Xiao Ran’s expulsion, but Flender refuses because Xiao Ran passed the entrance test. Xiao Ran’s purple, purple, and black soul rings leave Yu unable to reconcile his cultivation with his own theories 14.

After Xiao Ran displays an External Soul Bone in class, Yu urges Tang San to take it and plans an ambush using a clan artifact. At the Star Dou Great Forest, he demands Xiao Ran’s method for absorbing unusually powerful soul rings and threatens to take the bone. Xiao Ran defeats him; when the others arrive, Yu claims Xiao Ran attacked without cause 15 16.

Yu is a thin, unremarkable-looking man with a weary expression 2.

Personality

Yu takes pride in his martial-soul research and his standing as a teacher. He is quick to recognize Tang San’s potential, but initially dismisses Xiao Ran because of his lower innate soul power and apparently weak martial soul. Xiao Ran’s later achievements challenge Yu’s judgments and intensify their hostility 2 4 14.

He is protective of Tang San and defensive when his authority is questioned. His conflict with Xiao Ran escalates from refusing instruction to seeking Xiao Ran’s Soul Bone 5 6 15 16.

Martial-soul theory

Yu has studied more than six hundred people with Blue Silver Grass martial souls and uses his findings to infer Tang San’s hidden second martial soul 2.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

• Thunder Dragon Jade Pendant — A ritual artifact Yu took when he left the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon clan. It can temporarily disrupt an opponent’s soul-power flow and interrupt a charging soul skill. Yu uses it against Xiao Ran at the Star Dou Great Forest; it breaks after he channels his bloodline power into a dragon phantom 15 16.

Relationships

• Tang San — Yu’s personal disciple. Tang San defends him against Xiao Ran and participates in his plan to seize Xiao Ran’s Soul Bone 2 5 15 16.
• Xiao Ran — Briefly his nominal disciple, then an adversary. Yu dismisses his potential, later clashes with him at Nuoding and Shrek, and attempts to take his Soul Bone 2 4 6 14 16.
• Flender — An old friend who places Yu in charge of Shrek’s training but refuses his demand to expel Xiao Ran 14.
• Ning Rongrong — Yu is her teacher at least in name, according to Xiao Ran 33.
• Bibi Dong — They share a painful past. She recalls Yu leaving Spirit Hall years earlier and later orders an investigation into his activities and ties to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 33 35.
