Background / History

Previous Life

Tang San originally belonged to the Tang Sect in another world. Its central secret manual, the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, was connected to the circumstances that drove him to leap from a cliff to his death. He subsequently transmigrated into the Douluo world, retaining knowledge of its cultivation methods, martial arts, and hidden weapons 50.

Nuoding Academy and the Ganoderma Trade

At eight and a half, Tang San studied at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy under Yu Xiaogang. He admired his teacher’s apparent connections and composure, interpreting Yu Xiaogang’s familiarity with Titled Douluos as evidence that he had chosen an exceptional mentor 48 49.

Luofan visited the academy with Chrysanthemum Douluo Yue Guan to obtain Tang San’s martial arts. He offered a Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, which Tang San recognized as capable of helping Yu Xiaogang overcome his level-thirty bottleneck. Tang San immediately refused to exchange the complete Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record, declaring it more important than his life 49 50 51.

He accepted a narrower agreement that excluded the manual’s core hidden-weapon crafting methods. Tang San copied out Mysterious Heaven Skill, Purple Demon Eye, Mysterious Jade Hand, and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, then explained unclear passages to Luofan. He gave the ganoderma to Yu Xiaogang, whose soul power rose from level 29 to level 30 after consuming it 51.

The exchange subsequently damaged Tang San’s feelings toward his teacher. Once Yu Xiaogang could cultivate further, he devoted more attention to his own advancement and gave Tang San increasingly perfunctory guidance. Tang San resented sacrificing his martial arts only to receive less instruction in return 66 103.

Reunion in Suotuo City

Several years later, Tang San and Xiao Wu encountered Luofan outside Suotuo City. Luofan accused him of withholding Controlling Crane, Capturing Dragon from their earlier exchange. Tang San initially claimed that he had forgotten it because he had not mastered it well, then argued that their transaction had already been completed. Luofan’s precise knowledge of the technique renewed his suspicion about Luofan’s identity 103 104.

At a hotel, Tang San clashed with Dai Mubai and was overpowered by the Three-Ring Soul Elder. He then watched Luofan defeat Dai Mubai using the martial arts Tang San had supplied. Luofan’s twin martial souls, ten black soul rings, and altered techniques contradicted Tang San’s expectations about both soul-ring limits and his own inherited arts 105 106 107.

Over dinner, Tang San supplied Controlling Crane, Capturing Dragon in hopes of learning how Luofan had produced those unusual effects. Luofan answered that he had simply followed the manuals and had no special cultivation method to share. Feeling deceived, Tang San fired a Silent Sleeve Arrow at him and followed with Entanglement. Both attacks failed, and Luofan retaliated by striking him through the hotel window and pinning him beneath the Exquisite Pagoda. The provided passage ends with Tang San coughing blood as Luofan approaches with killing intent 107 108.

Appearance

  • Childhood complexion: Dark-skinned 49.
  • Facial appearance: Luofan describes him as an ordinary-looking country boy during their first meeting 49.
  • Later recognition: By their Suotuo City reunion, his appearance has changed enough that Luofan must examine him carefully before recognizing him 103.

Personality

Tang San is highly protective of the Tang Sect’s inheritance. He refuses to surrender the complete Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record even for an herb that could transform his teacher’s prospects. He is nevertheless willing to negotiate over material he considers less central, distinguishing the manual’s cultivation arts from its more valuable hidden-weapon and poison knowledge 50 51.

His respect for Yu Xiaogang initially includes genuine admiration, but it also carries concern for maintaining his image as a dutiful disciple. His resentment grows when the sacrifice made for his teacher results in diminished guidance rather than gratitude expressed through continued instruction 49 66 103.

He is suspicious of unexplained knowledge about his secrets and closely studies Luofan’s use of his techniques. Xiao Wu’s enthusiasm for Luofan also makes him jealous. During their final dispute, anger overrides caution: despite witnessing Luofan’s superiority over Dai Mubai, he launches a surprise attack that Luofan interprets as an attempt to kill him 104 106 107 108.

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 106 108.

  • Blue Silver Grass — First Soul Skill: Entanglement: Produces rapidly growing grass that winds around a target to restrain them 108.
  • Entanglement’s demonstrated limit: It cannot bind Luofan because his Unrestricted Golden Entry grants immunity to control effects 108.
  • Clear Sky Hammer cultivation strategy: Tang San follows Yu Xiaogang’s advice to delay adding rings to his second martial soul so that he can eventually begin with higher-aged rings 106.

Mysterious Heaven Skill

The internal cultivation method recorded in the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 51.

  • Tang San can reproduce its fundamentals in writing and explain them to another learner 51.
  • He trades this method to Luofan without surrendering the manual’s core hidden-weapon crafting knowledge 51.

Purple Demon Eye

An observational martial art that Tang San activates to scrutinize Luofan’s fight with Dai Mubai 106.

  • Allows him to assess Luofan’s footwork and compare their mastery of Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track 106.
  • Tang San believes ordinary high-speed movement should remain visible to his Purple Demon Eye, helping him recognize that Luofan’s sudden repositioning is teleportation rather than speed alone 107.
  • Luofan’s weak-point detection effect is an enhancement of Luofan’s version, not an ability demonstrated by Tang San 107.

Mysterious Jade Hand

A hand-tempering martial art intended to make the hands extremely tough, protecting them during toxin handling and hidden-weapon use 74.

  • Tang San’s palms turn jade-like when he prepares Dragon Whisker Needles against Luofan 108.
  • He is surprised when Luofan uses the technique to reflect White Tiger Fierce Light Wave; attack reflection is not an effect Tang San recognizes in his own version 106 107.

Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track

A movement and footwork technique contained in the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 51.

  • Tang San judges his own technical mastery and agility with it superior to Luofan’s during the fight against Dai Mubai 106.
  • He attributes Luofan’s greater movement speed to higher soul power rather than better mastery 106.
  • The teleportation effect displayed by Luofan is not demonstrated by Tang San 107.

Controlling Crane, Capturing Dragon

An accompanying martial art of the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record associated with hidden-weapon launching techniques 103.

  • Tang San omits it from his first exchange with Luofan 103.
  • He later writes out the complete technique after seeking information about Luofan’s altered martial arts 107.

Hidden Weapons and Herbal Knowledge

Tang San retains specialized knowledge from the Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record 50 51.

  • Hidden weapons: Uses a concealed sleeve-arrow attack and prepares Dragon Whisker Needles during combat 108.
  • Protected knowledge: Keeps the manual’s core hidden-weapon crafting methods out of his agreement with Luofan 51.
  • Herb identification: Immediately recognizes Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma and confirms its potential to help Yu Xiaogang overcome his cultivation bottleneck 49 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Mysterious Heaven Treasure Record — Tang Sect’s central secret manual, containing internal cultivation, martial arts, hidden-weapon crafting and usage methods, and poison combinations. Tang San preserves its core secrets while sharing selected techniques 50 51.
  • Silent Sleeve Arrow — Concealed weapon used to launch his opening surprise attack against Luofan; the shot is dodged 108.
  • Dragon Whisker Needles — Hidden weapons prepared after Entanglement fails; Luofan interrupts before Tang San can launch them 108.
  • Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma — Briefly received through the martial-arts exchange, then given to Yu Xiaogang rather than consumed himself 51.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — Father. Secretly watches Tang San at Nuoding Academy and follows the meeting with Luofan and Yue Guan out of concern for his son’s safety 49.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Initially commands Tang San’s admiration; their relationship deteriorates after Tang San obtains the ganoderma for him and receives less guidance as a result 49 51 66 103.
  • Xiao Wu — Close companion who calls him “Third Brother.” Her admiration for Luofan provokes his jealousy, and her attempt to mediate their dispute fails to prevent his attack 103 104 108.
  • Luofan — Trading partner who becomes an adversary. Obtains several Tang Sect martial arts from Tang San, arouses suspicion through his unexplained knowledge, and ultimately defeats him after Tang San attacks 51 103 107 108.
  • Dai Mubai — Opponent in a hotel clash. Gains the upper hand over Tang San before challenging Luofan 105.
