At that moment...
Ning Chengyi was beside a stream, washing his bare body in its clear, icy water. He felt no chill at all, instead letting out one contented sigh after another.
"It's been ages since I went swimming outdoors. The last time was... well, the last time. Hmm... at the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect."
He had not wanted to recall it, but when he remembered that the happiest years of his life had also been spent there, Ning Chengyi could not help smiling bitterly. Unfortunately, back then, he had focused solely on cultivation and learning about the Douluo Continent.
He had known next to nothing about anything else.
Even his love life had ended in complete failure.
But now, everything was getting better.
At last, the dragon had found water, and the bitter days had given way to sweet ones. Fortunes changed with time—never look down on a young man just because he was poor!
"Hahaha... strength really is a wonderful thing!"
He plunged into the deep water, then rose up, letting the moonlight shine over his body. His second martial soul hovered above his palm, absorbing the moonlight as though paying homage to it.
"Oh! I never thought that after absorbing the power of the Moonlit Perching Butterfly Flower, the Phantom Butterfly would be able to absorb moonlight too. How fascinating."
Ning Chengyi murmured to himself. Only when the Phantom Butterfly seemed full, blissfully closed its eyes, and swayed from side to side before collapsing onto his palm did he put it away.
"That feels great!"
Ning Chengyi shouted and continued frolicking in the water like a fish, until a startled cry came from the bank.
"Ah!"
The scream was sharp and piercing.
"Who's there?!"
Ning Chengyi looked toward the scream and immediately spotted a young woman—one he happened to have met before.
"Why did you come back? Your soul power's been unsealed too."
She was one of the women he had rescued.
"Are you an exhibitionist?!"
The young woman gritted her teeth. In the moonlight, her face was as red as a ripe apple on a tree.
"Hey! I'm swimming here, and you suddenly barge in to peek at me. I haven't even called you a voyeur, and you're already turning it around on me?"
"Or did you carefully arrange this little scene?"
"Were you planning to repay me for saving your life by offering yourself to me?"
Ning Chengyi felt no shame whatsoever. Although the stream had soaked his boxer briefs, at least they still covered him.
As everyone knew, wearing underwear where people swam did not count as exposing yourself.
By that same logic, Ning Chengyi was dressed perfectly normally. The young woman was the one making a fuss over nothing.
"You're twisting the facts. My name is Zhu Zhuqing. Thank you for saving me."
The young woman snorted and turned away, her voice softening a little as she spoke.
"What was that?" Ning Chengyi froze, genuinely having failed to hear her clearly.
"I said thank you!" Zhu Zhuqing instinctively turned around and shouted, only for her face to flush even redder.
Because the moonlight illuminated quite a lovely sight.
"Mm. It was no trouble. If there's nothing else, go on. Don't interrupt my swim."
Ning Chengyi showed no surprise at Zhu Zhuqing's words.
The only thing that puzzled him was how Zhu Zhuqing, with her Hell Spirit Cat martial soul, had been captured.
But on second thought, what did that have to do with him? He did not ask. Instead, he plunged into the water and began swimming on his back. Even in the cold water, a young man's blood ran especially hot.
It seemed to prove that old saying.
Dead or alive, a man's cock still pointed at the sky.
"Ah! Lecher! Hooligan! Bastard..."
Zhu Zhuqing covered her eyes, shouted several times, then fled into the forest.
She had heard rustling and thought there might be a soul beast, so she had come to investigate. Instead, she had found someone swimming. Recognizing him as the man who had saved her, she had intended to thank him.
But the instant he stood up in the water, her face had turned red and she had cried out. After all, she had never seen anything like that in her life.
No matter how aloof she normally was, she was still an inexperienced girl.
"Damn hooligan!"
"I thought he was a decent person. Turns out he's a bastard!"
Zhu Zhuqing left, cursing all the way.
"But those evil soul masters are next. I'll kill them!"
With that quiet murmur, she vanished into the forest like a cat demon prowling through the night.
"What a strange girl. Who comes to thank someone in the middle of the night?"
Ning Chengyi climbed out of the water, glanced around, dried himself off, and took a fresh set of clothes from his storage ring to change into.
"I'll ask around tomorrow and find out where those evil soul masters are."
He headed in the direction that sneaky fellow had fled earlier, chose a relatively safe spot, and settled down to doze.
The next day.
At the first light of dawn, Ning Chengyi swung down from the tree. Following the directions those evil soul masters had given him, he continued along the trail. Only after an hour did he finally spot signs of habitation in the distance.
"It should be up ahead. I just don't know how many people there are, or whether killing those men last night has already alerted them."
Watching the smoke rising ahead, Ning Chengyi surveyed the area from a distance and muttered to himself. He memorized the route, planning to investigate again that evening.
But then he spotted a figure crouching less than two hundred meters outside the evil soul masters' camp, completely motionless.
"She's pretty bold. Never mind, I'll let her do her thing first."
It was none other than Zhu Zhuqing.
Ning Chengyi ignored her presence, turned around, and slipped into the forest to wait for an opportunity.
At nightfall, just when people were most relaxed, fierce sounds of fighting suddenly erupted in the previously quiet mountain forest.
Hiding nearby, Ning Chengyi quickly approached when he heard the commotion and leaped onto a tall tree with a good view. "What a reckless woman." He shook his head helplessly.
The young woman moved like a cat demon, but after killing three or five men, she had already been surrounded by the evil soul masters who arrived afterward. Behind them, another five Soul Grandmasters stood ready to support the others.
"A team of at least fifty evil soul masters, with a rank twenty-nine Soul Grandmaster as their strongest member. This really is troublesome."
Seeing the Blue Silver Gang's lineup, Ning Chengyi scratched his head. That crazy woman had actually dared to charge in alone and start killing. Although she was a rank twenty-six Soul Grandmaster, two fists could hardly fend off four hands.
Especially as an Agility Attack type, choosing a head-on confrontation instead of making proper use of surprise attacks was no different from courting death.
"Hope you get lucky." Ning Chengyi did not choose to intervene. He could not concern himself with whether Zhu Zhuqing lived or died. After all, even if he went in, it would accomplish nothing.
This was no time to play the hero rescuing a damsel.
Ning Chengyi quietly slipped away again. Before long, however, he felt the ground tremble, as though pursuers were approaching.
"Trouble's here. Can't avoid it even if I try."
He quickly concealed himself in a tree and watched. Zhu Zhuqing was fleeing toward him, pursued by enemies. Blood stained her entire body, and her clothes were torn in several places, with fresh blood seeping through.
If not for the abilities of her Hell Spirit Cat, she could never have escaped the encirclement.
"Two Soul Grandmasters. This could be an opportunity."
Seeing that only two Soul Grandmasters were pursuing her, Ning Chengyi's lips curled upward. "What a good person." He climbed silently down the tree and hid along Zhu Zhuqing's escape route, waiting for the two unlucky bastards to arrive.
