Background
Draco comes from the influential Malfoy family, whose Wiltshire estate has been held for ten centuries. His father taught him that their ancestors came to Britain alongside William I. Draco initially treats his surname as proof of superiority, but Sean Wallop uses the family’s historical connections with Muggle rulers and aristocrats to challenge that claim 11.
The Malfoys’ wealth and influence exceed those of the declining Nott family. Before Theodore Nott begins school, his father instructs him to maintain a good relationship with Draco 535.
Appearance
- Blond hair, noted during his introduction aboard the Hogwarts Express 10.
- Haughty bearing: he raises his nose, puffs out his chest when his family is recognized, and deliberately emphasizes the Malfoy surname when introducing himself 11.
- Drawn-out speech, described as arrogant and grating during his first confrontation with Hermione and Sean 11.
Personality
Draco initially combines pure-blood prejudice with a strong need for recognition. He insults Muggle-born students, assumes Sean is seeking the Malfoys’ favor, and relies on Crabbe and Goyle for intimidation. When Sean defeats his companions and threatens him, his swagger gives way to panic 11.
His ambition later becomes more calculated. He accepts Sean’s advice on gaining influence, recruits followers through promises of advancement, and reshapes Slytherin’s understanding of nobility. Rather than abandoning pure-blood pride, he promotes a code in which insulting Muggle-borns is dishonorable 338 423 522.
Draco also develops greater independence and practical loyalty. He refuses to leave before Dumbledore’s funeral even after his father strikes him. During the Returners’ attack, he cooperates with Hermione despite disliking her, privately judging the pure-blood students who mock her while lacking her ability 586 785.

- Casts a hex on Sean at Sean’s request, helping stage a hospitalization as an alibi for the dragon-rescue operation. The spell is not named in the supplied account 497.

- Receives temporary access to the Room of Requirement and responsibility for moving the Slytherins inside when instructed 785.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hogwarts Express Confrontation
Draco interrupts Hermione and Sean’s conversation, insults Hermione as a “Mudblood,” and dismisses Sean on the same grounds. Sean counters with the Malfoys’ Muggle connections and casts Quietus, reducing Draco’s shouting to a whisper 10 11.
Draco orders Crabbe and Goyle to attack, but Sean defeats them and frightens Draco into retreat. The encounter also reinforces Sean and Hermione’s concerns about prejudice within Slytherin 11 12.
Cooperation Against Umbridge’s Divisions
As Umbridge’s preferential treatment of pure-blood students undermines Hogwarts’ unity, Sean privately approaches Draco. He advises Draco to build prestige through mysterious stories and gradually distance himself from Crabbe 336 338.
Draco subsequently boasts of family knowledge about the Chamber of Secrets. When challenged about his failure to reveal its location during the Basilisk crisis, he claims that interfering would have contradicted Slytherin’s intentions. He later sees Sean’s prediction fulfilled when hostility shifts toward an outside enemy, allowing Slytherins to stand alongside the other Houses 338 340.
“True Nobility” and the Pureblood Society
Following Sean’s advice, Draco works to unite Slytherin under the slogan “true nobility.” His campaign eventually makes the slur “Mudblood” incompatible with the honor his followers claim to uphold 423 522.
This change becomes visible during the conflict with Durmstrang: Slytherins are particularly angered by Reinhardt Nott’s use of the insult, regarding it as disgraceful conduct for a pure-blood wizard 522.
Assistance to Sean and Loyalty to Hogwarts
| Event | Draco’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Dragon-rescue alibi | Hexes Sean as arranged, giving him a hospital alibi while he intervenes in the MacFasty family’s transport of the Black Dragons 497. |
| Dumbledore’s funeral | Refuses his parents’ demand to leave Hogwarts, even after Lucius hits him with his cane. Leads Slytherins in preparations; their group arranges more than half the grounds 586. |
| Sean’s student duels | Becomes more respectful and friendly toward Sean’s students after witnessing their victories 641. |
| Returners’ attack | Coordinates Slytherin security with Hermione and prepares to evacuate students through the Room of Requirement 785. |
Public Rivalry and Private Alliance
Despite their cooperation, Draco and Sean do not publicly present themselves as close friends. Other Slytherins remember their initial hostility but rarely see either direct conflict or intimate conversation between them. Draco repeatedly avoids suggestions that he should compete with Sean for prestige 785.
By the Returners’ attack, Draco explicitly considers himself on Sean’s side. He also plans to make Slytherins who sneer at Hermione review the Pureblood Society’s principles, recognizing that their ancestry does not excuse their inferiority to her in ability 785.
Relationships
- Sean Wallop — Initially an enemy and the person who humiliates him on the Hogwarts Express; later a discreet adviser and ally whose plans Draco supports 11 338 497 785.
- Hermione Granger — An early target of his prejudice. Their personal dislike persists, but Draco cooperates with her leadership during the defense of Hogwarts 11 785.
- Lucius Malfoy — His father and a source of family pride. Draco eventually defies him over remaining at Hogwarts for Dumbledore’s funeral 11 586.
- Crabbe and Goyle — Companions used for physical intimidation during his first clash with Sean. Sean later encourages Draco to distance himself from Crabbe 11 338.
- Osman — A prospective follower whom Draco courts with the promise of a Ministry career; Osman’s ambitions create tension with Crabbe 338.
- Theodore Nott — A solitary housemate whom Draco repeatedly approaches, showing interest in the Nott family’s history. Theodore suspects Draco is trying to establish Malfoy superiority 535.
Trivia
- Gormlaith Gaunt addresses Sean as “Draco” when teaching him the Horcrux Creation Spell. That scene does not establish that Draco himself learned the spell 182.
