Background

Youth and family

Dumbledore met Gellert Grindelwald during the summer of 1899. The two brilliant young wizards rapidly became inseparable, sharing an interest in ancient magical history, Herpo the Foul, Ancient Magic, and the Deathly Hallows. They toasted to finding all three Hallows and pursued the ideal of “For the Greater Good.” 127 129 130

His ambitions conflicted with his family responsibilities. Grindelwald exploited Dumbledore’s frustration over caring for his sister Ariana, while Aberforth resented Dumbledore’s neglect of her. Ariana’s condition ultimately became a central cause of the conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. 129

Dumbledore later admitted that he had failed to save Ariana and that her death remained a source of immense guilt. He also revealed that he had once separated a newborn soul from a child; Sean concludes that the child was Ariana, whose Obscurus became central to Aurelius Dumbledore’s creation. 112 134

Hogwarts career

Before becoming headmaster, Dumbledore defended Rubeus Hagrid after Hagrid was wrongly blamed for opening the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid was allowed to return to Hogwarts as gamekeeper because Dumbledore believed in his innocence. 163

As headmaster, Dumbledore commands considerable prestige among Hogwarts students and staff. He introduces Newmontgard’s academic exchange plan, personally oversees major threats within the castle, and keeps dangerous secrets from students when he believes doing so will protect them. 16 44 186
