The smell of fried fish drifted over the rocky shore on the western side of Azkaban Island.
The black fortress loomed behind it. Dementors floated slowly between its towers. Two jutting boulders sheltered the shore and blocked the view from above. North Sea waves shattered against the rock face, while the cold wind whipped salt spray against Gavin's face in relentless bursts.
Gavin sat out of the wind with a small pot set up in front of him.
Orange flames burned quietly beneath the pot. Oil bubbled, and the battered fish slowly turned golden, a ring of tiny bubbles forming around its edges.
A small serving of fried French fries lay on a piece of parchment beside it.
The previous night, the Ministry of Magic had locked all his belongings in a holding room on the lower level.
Whoever had logged them in must have taken their job very seriously.
His original Wand, broken in two, had gone into its own Evidence Bag. The spare Wand taken from Fake Lockhart's body had a label too, complete with a note: "Origin unknown. Possible murder weapon."
The potatoes, cooking oil, flour, salt, Pepper, and vinegar in his Dragon Hide Bag had all been filed under "Other Suspicious Items."
The Ministry of Magic's vigilance toward ingredients had finally reached a level worthy of United Kingdom cuisine.
Unfortunately for them, they didn't know to search a seagull.
After flying out through the gap in his cell door, Gavin had circled halfway around the outer wall and slipped into the holding room through a vent in its ceiling. No one was inside. He landed, changed back into human form, packed up his things, and flew out the same way.
