"Merry Christmas... and..." Sylvia's voice trailed off. A faint blush rose to her cheeks, lovely in the candlelight.
Will dipped his head and leaned closer. "And what?"
Sylvia shot him a look, then rested her head lightly on his shoulder. "I have genuine feelings for you."
Will smiled and kept turning with his arm around her waist.
"I know. I feel the same," Will said with a slight nod.
Their eyes met, silver-gray and deep brown, saying everything without a word.
For the moment, both were remarkably restrained.
They kept turning, silver-gray and silver-black entwined, like a painting come to life. Music flowed, candles flickered, and snowflakes drifted slowly from the ceiling. The air grew intimate.
Across the dance floor, couples spun beneath the lights, skirts swirling.
The band played tune after tune, from waltzes to foxtrots, tangos to quicksteps. The mood grew livelier, and the whole Great Hall was swept up in celebration.
In the distance, Fred and George tried to liven up the ball with a newly invented firework. One glare from Professor McGonagall made them put it away sheepishly.
Somehow, though, they had attached little sparkler-like fireworks to their shoulders. As they turned with their partners, sparks whirled around them in a dazzling display.
Professor McGonagall danced with Professor Flitwick. They moved together effortlessly, clearly both old hands.
Every so often, Professor McGonagall sent Professor Flitwick spinning. His little figure twirled as nimbly as a top, drawing applause from the students nearby.
Lupin and Professor Babbling danced slowly at the edge of the floor.
All the professors were dancing except Snape, who stood off the floor watching Will and Sylvia spin.
The members of the High Tower were scattered across the dance floor.
Malfoy danced with Pansy Parkinson. They kept their steps proper and polished; both were
