"Your movements are too stiff. You'll never dodge an enemy's spells moving like that."
"Don't let your enemy predict where you're going."
"Is that how you cast the Disarming Charm?"
"Potter, watch Behrens's wand movement when he casts the Disarming Charm!"
Moody was every bit the seasoned old Auror. To him, Will's fighting skills were as undeveloped as a newborn's. Under Moody's relentless coaching, Will gained plenty of experience—though most of it was Stamina experience.
What Moody taught wasn't magic, but battlefield experience—the kind they would never get from regular classes at Hogwarts.
It was exhausting, but the gains in experience and combat skill were real. Will wasn't strong enough to overcome every challenge through sheer power yet, so until he was, learning how to fight was essential.
He had to make sure he survived long enough to grow stronger.
"Potter, remember: skill takes practice, but not mindless practice. Think about why you're making every wand movement."
"And you, Behrens. Your spellwork is excellent, but you have almost no combat experience. Both of you will come here once a week from now on." Moody nodded at them. The two children really were promising.
Will was panting when he left the office. He had used up a lot of energy. For now, stamina was his weakness; he wasn't even sure he was as strong as Harry. Harry was a close-range wizard, after all, while Will spent most of his time on academic research.
Nor had Will noticed any clear sign of magic strengthening his body, as people in the Wizarding World often claimed it did. Perhaps that effect wouldn't kick in until he was an adult?
