Thursday morning brought the students their penultimate final exam: Defense Against the Dark Arts. Professor Lupin had devised an unusual test, something like a challenging obstacle course.
The candidates had to face a series of trials. First, they had to brave a deep pond occupied by grindylows. Then they had to nimbly avoid a series of pits containing red caps, before carefully crossing a squelching marsh without being deceived by a Hinkypunk's illusions. Finally, they had to climb up to an old trunk and face a fierce struggle with a brand-new Boggart.
After Professor Lupin had explained the rules in detail, Jerry couldn't help asking, "Professor, do I have to face the Boggart too?"
Before Professor Lupin could answer, however, the Slytherin students involuntarily took several steps back. Goyle, who had been injured last time, went particularly pale.
Seeing this, Professor Lupin quickly waved his hands. "No, no, you don't need to deal with the Boggart. But you can choose someone from Slytherin House as your opponent for the final stage."
Many of the Slytherins resented this announcement, silently grumbling about the unfair arrangement. Why did the opponent have to be one of them? Malfoy, who had been standing at the very front of the line, frowned slightly and quietly retreated two steps, hiding behind Goyle and Crabbe.
"Now, let the exam begin," Professor Lupin announced, taking out two student lists. "Gryffindor students first!"
Harry stepped into the examination course Professor Lupin had so carefully designed. In very little time, he fearlessly cleared every obstacle, including the final Boggart challenge, his cheeks flushed with excitement.
Professor Lupin nodded in satisfaction and smiled at Harry. "Harry Potter, full marks."
Ron and Neville also made good progress at first. When they faced the Hinkypunk, however, its illusions unfortunately led them into waist-deep
