The night was black as ink.
A shadowy figure sneaked into the sanatorium.
"Where the hell are the power room and the breaker?"
Li Guolong glanced around warily, afraid he might wake the monsters here.
But even though he moved on tiptoe and took every precaution, Chen Feng still pounced on him at the next corner and pinned him to the floor.
Finally.
Pretending not to recognize him, Chen Feng growled, "Die, monster!"
Li Guolong froze, then hurriedly waved his hands. "Don't attack, man! I'm human!"
"And you expect me to believe that?"
"See that internet addiction school over there? I'm a student those monsters dragged here. Besides, have you ever seen an Imposter talk this fluently?"
"You have a point."
"So who are you?"
Chen Feng made a show of frowning, then said deliberately, "Oh, I'm Chen Feng. You know Captain Li from the city police bureau? He sent me to investigate this hospital."
In Chen Feng's plan, Li Guolong would now say he was Captain Li's son. That connection would build trust between them, and Chen Feng could get the key from him.
But instead, Li Guolong asked without giving anything away, "If you work for Captain Li, what proof do you have?"
Well, look at that. He's cautious.
Captain Li's son, all right. He got some of his old man's brains.
Chen Feng rattled off the details. "Don't believe me? Captain Li's badge number is 823235. He has a female apprentice named Zhang Ruobing, whose parents were cops too. Oh, and Captain Li has a windproof lighter he treasures. He barely lets anyone else use it."
"What's written on the lighter's lid?"
"'To Dad.'"
"You really do work for my dad!"
Li Guolong believed him now. "Chen, my name's Guolong. I'm Captain Li's son!"
Thank goodness. If he'd asked me Captain Li's actual name, I'd have been caught.
Chen Feng breathed a sigh of relief, then turned the tables. "You're Captain Li's son? Liar! Captain Li doesn't have any children!"
"It's true. Everyone brought here has their existence..." Li Guolong explained the erasure to Chen Feng again. "Think about it, Chen. How could my dad not have children at his age? And if he didn't, who gave him that lighter?"
"You make a good point!"
Once they trusted each other, the rest was easy.
"The Sheep-Face Key? I've got it."
"Guolong, there's something else I need you to do."
After getting the key, Chen Feng explained what he had come to do.
If all he wanted was the Sheep-Face Key, he could have taken it by force. There was no need to go through all this trouble and risk exposing himself as a transmigrator just to earn Li Guolong's trust.
He had done it because he needed Li Guolong to lure Rabbit Face out of the Nurses' Station, giving him a chance to steal the other key.
He couldn't ask anyone else to do it.
After all, every patient in the ward was listed in the Logbook. If Rabbit Nurse spotted one of them, they were dead.
Chen Feng said gravely, "Guolong, you're not in the Logbook, so Rabbit Nurse can't kill you instantly. But if she keeps her eyes on you for a full minute, you could still die. Are you willing?"
Li Guolong didn't hesitate. "I am."
"That's the spirit!"
Chen Feng knew Old Li's kid wouldn't be a coward.
And so, in the lounge...
Rabbit Nurse was asleep at the Nurses' Station when a kettle suddenly arced through the air and smashed into the station she was so proud of.
Li Guolong expected her to rage and scream.
But she did neither. In a calm voice, Rabbit Nurse called, "Orderlies, go see what happened."
Rabbit Nurse had seen plenty of lunatics at the Mental Hospital. A little commotion like this was nothing to her.
But the expected White Coats never appeared, so Rabbit Nurse raised her voice and urged them on.
"Move it!"
Still no response.
You can scream yourself hoarse. No one's coming.
Chen Feng chuckled outside the lounge. He had already taken care of those Imposters.
Footsteps came from the lounge. That crisp sound could only be Rabbit Nurse's rubber shoes.
It's up to you now.
Chen Feng gave him a thumbs-up. Li Guolong got the message and ran toward the main doors.
Quick! I have to be quick!
As soon as Rabbit Nurse left, Chen Feng slipped into the Nurses' Station. After a frantic search, he found the other key.
Got it!
Chen Feng raced to the Basement without stopping. He inserted both keys, and with a click, the door to the isolation room opened.
"You found the keys? Wait, I haven't put my blindfold on yet!"
"My eyes are closed!"
Chen Feng walked through the doorway with his eyes shut and silently commanded, Check in.
[Ding! Congratulations! You have successfully checked in at the Fourth Mental Hospital. Reward: 4 System Points]
As the mechanical voice faded, Chen Feng suddenly felt something cool against him. A soft, warm body pressed into his arms. She Qingqing had hugged him.
He could feel her happiness and fear in the way she trembled, so he reassured her. "I told you I'd get you out. I never break my word."
It was a cool line, or so Chen Feng thought, but She Qingqing sounded puzzled. "Did you say that?"
Huh? I didn't?
Chen Feng scratched his head awkwardly, then realized what had happened.
Damn it. I said that in my last life. All that Sandevistan practice has scrambled my memories.
A little while later...
The sound of rubber shoes echoed through the sanatorium corridor.
Li Guolong kept his eyes shut as Rabbit Nurse dragged him back like a dead dog.
He hadn't died or turned into an Imposter. When Rabbit Nurse caught up to him, he had rolled around on the lawn outside the sanatorium, acting like a lunatic. That triggered one of the sanatorium's rules and saved his life.
Chen Feng had taught him that trick. It really worked.
But the other instruction left him baffled.
Why did Chen tell me to keep my eyes closed after I got caught?
Before Li Guolong could figure it out, he heard Rabbit Nurse ask, "Who are you?"
Two figures stood in front of her.
The string of uninvited visitors and the disappearance of the orderlies had put Rabbit Nurse on high alert. She set Li Guolong down and took out her notebook.
Then one of the figures reached for a switch.
The corridor lights came on.
The moment Rabbit Nurse saw who stood before her, the easy smile of someone in complete control froze on her face.
"You!"
A startled grunt escaped Rabbit Nurse's throat. She raised a hand to shield her eyes from the other person's gaze, but her arm had gone rigid, as heavy as if stones were tied to it!
Seeing her skin turn gray-white, Rabbit Nurse had no choice but to focus her strength on resisting the petrification. That meant she could no longer maintain her translucent glass barrier.
The instant the glass barrier vanished, the figure beside She Qingqing—a masked man in a hospital gown—disappeared, then abruptly reappeared in front of Rabbit Nurse.
So fast! When did he get here?
The thought had barely crossed Rabbit Nurse's mind when agony tore through her head. With a bang, it burst on the spot like an overinflated balloon!
