Ch. 401Kirigakure Goes to War
Plot points and events
- Uchiha Hikari stays with Madara Uchiha to train. Uchiha Yi believes she cannot betray the Shinobi World, partly because she has absorbed his Chakra—and because Yachihoko also gives him a way to influence her.
- Yi returns to Konoha and resumes his duties as Hokage. He considers starting a family, but recognizes that altered events make the familiar birth dates of Naruto, Sasuke, and other young shinobi uncertain.
- Kirigakure unexpectedly moves against the Land of Lightning. Under Uchiha Fugaku’s leadership, it takes control of the village and declares war, breaking the other villages’ understanding that they should avoid fighting one another while the wider struggle between shinobi and daimyō remains unresolved.
- Kirigakure’s attack throws the already divided Land of Lightning into greater turmoil. The Raikage is enraged, while Ōnoki and others are surprised that Kirigakure has overcome its internal problems so quickly despite its heavy losses.
- Madara confronts Fugaku, warning that the villages need to unite against Konoha and Yi. Fugaku claims that Madara, Hikari, and he together can defeat Yi.
Character developments and interactions
- Yi remains confident and calculating: he sees Hikari’s growing resemblance to himself as a consequence of her exposure to his Chakra, and considers his own future alongside his political responsibilities.
- Hikari is positioned as both Madara’s student and someone Yi can subtly influence through Yachihoko.
- Fugaku emerges as an unexpectedly bold—and possibly reckless—leader, choosing to attack Kumogakure rather than confront Konoha directly.
- Madara is frustrated by Fugaku’s decision and tries to make him recognize the strategic danger. Fugaku counters with confidence in their combined strength.
- The Raikage reacts with disbelief that Kirigakure has chosen to invade his country instead of targeting Konoha.
Significant themes
- Power and influence: Yi’s strength allows him to shape Hikari even without direct control.
- Political upheaval: The shinobi villages’ shared front against the daimyō is threatened when Kirigakure breaks their informal pact.
- Strategic miscalculation and confidence: Fugaku’s faith in the strength of his allies clashes with Madara’s caution.
- An altered timeline: Yi’s uncertainty about familiar births underscores how profoundly the world has changed.
