Ch. 101Shamon vs. Hanzō 2
Plot points and events
- Shamon and Hanzō continue their duel amid a larger battle between Sunagakure and Amegakure. Shamon uses a Wind Blade to kill several Rain ninja who are preparing to attack other Sand forces.
- Hanzō summons Ibuse, whose poisonous mist kills Sunagakure and Amegakure fighters alike. Shamon escapes the visible cloud, but Hanzō continues fighting him.
- Shamon gradually weakens from a poison he cannot detect. Hanzō reveals that his breath itself produces poisonous gas, so prolonged close combat is dangerous. He exploits Shamon’s momentary distraction to slash his back.
- Wounded and poisoned, Shamon orders the Sand forces to retreat. He raises a vast wave of sand to shield their withdrawal, while Hanzō counters with Water Release.
- Hanzō declines to pursue, believing Shamon will die unless treated quickly.
Character developments
- Shamon remains ruthless and strategically minded, willing to attack nearby enemies during his duel. Once poisoned and wounded, he shifts from trying to win the fight to protecting his forces through an organized retreat.
- Hanzō demonstrates tactical cunning and a willingness to sacrifice his own troops, using Ibuse’s poison indiscriminately. He presents himself as the defender of the Land of Rain and sees Shamon’s likely death as a warning to the great nations.
Significant themes
- War’s brutality: Both sides suffer, and battlefield ethics give way to survival and victory.
- Power imbalance: Hanzō recognizes the greater resources of the major nations, while the Rain forces face heavy losses.
- Sacrifice and resistance: Hanzō frames Amegakure’s willingness to die as defiance against invaders.
- Hidden threats and intelligence: Shamon avoids the obvious poison but is caught by Hanzō’s lesser-known, close-range toxin.
Character interactions
- Shamon and Hanzō exchange taunts as they fight, each condemning the other’s conduct while using lethal tactics themselves.
- Hanzō’s poison harms allies and enemies alike; his warning to the Rain ninja underscores his readiness to accept their deaths.
- Shamon’s retreat order and sand barrier protect his soldiers, while Hanzō’s decision not to pursue reflects confidence that the poison will finish Shamon.
