History

Origins and founding of Konoha

According to The Tale of the Uchiha, the clan descends from a crimson-eyed Ōtsutsuki faction. After a war in which some of that faction rebelled against its leader, Tomomori, the defectors took the surname Uchiha from their family's gunbai. The same account says other Ōtsutsuki descendants received surnames including Senju and Uzumaki 47.

The Uchiha later helped found Konoha. Madara Uchiha eventually left the village, taking the clan's gunbai and advanced techniques with him. Uchiha Setsuna later plotted a rebellion, but the clan did not follow him 9 13.

Place in Konoha

Many Uchiha enter the Military Police Force after becoming chūnin. The institution gives the clan a role in Konoha but leaves its members with limited influence elsewhere in the village; policing also makes enemies among civilians. By the time Yan is a child, prejudice makes it difficult for civilian Uchiha to find work or trade outside the compound 42.

Clan head Fugaku wants to ease those tensions. Some elders oppose sharing clan knowledge, but archive keeper Yashiro backs Fugaku and Yan when Yan lends Anko a Dragon Fire Technique scroll. Yashiro argues that the village already possesses the technique and that sharing the clan's additional training notes could improve its reputation 13.

Cooperation with the village

Yan's Shinobi World Daily regularly reports good deeds by Uchiha police officers. Its success brings the clan income and improves villagers' opinion of it 18 19. Later, Yan and Fugaku secure clan approval for a village-supervised research agreement: Konoha will buy Sharingan recovered from deceased Uchiha, and the clan will receive the first injections if the proposed experiment succeeds. The agreement passes despite initial opposition from hardliners 40 42.

Abilities & Clan Knowledge

Sharingan

• The Sharingan is distinguished by its tomoe. Yan awakens a Two-Tomoe Sharingan at five and reaches Three-Tomoe at seven; Obito awakens the eyes under emotional shock but initially lacks the chakra to use them properly 7 8 36 42.
• Yan uses his Sharingan to cast genjutsu, turn an attacker's genjutsu against him, read movements in combat, and copy Kakashi's Chidori 14 28 29 30.
• The Tale of the Uchiha describes an ancestral secret treasure that could grant ocular techniques to resolute bearers of Three-Tomoe eyes without changing their appearance. Yan discovers the account in an old archive; the described practice is not shown in use by the present-day clan 47.

Techniques and archives

• The clan collection contains Fire Release, taijutsu, genjutsu, Uchiha-style swordsmanship, and techniques devised against the Senju. Yashiro oversees access to the collection 8.
• Documented Uchiha techniques include the Great Fireball Technique, Dragon Fire Technique, and the sword-and-flame attack Sun Halo Dance 7 13 27.
• Surviving historical records are incomplete. Yan and Orochimaru search former Uchiha sites for older accounts, and Yan later finds The Tale of the Uchiha in a cave archive 27 47.

Relationships

• Konoha — The clan is part of the village, though its relationship with village leaders and civilians has been strained. Yan, Fugaku, and Yashiro support efforts to improve it 11 13 42.
• Senju and Uzumaki — Related through the Ōtsutsuki ancestry described in The Tale of the Uchiha. Orochimaru's research also examines the differing bodily and ocular strengths of the Senju and Uchiha 40 47.
• Madara Uchiha — A former clan member who left Konoha with the Uchiha gunbai and advanced techniques 13.
• Fugaku Uchiha — Clan head and Police Force captain who advocates better relations with Konoha 1 13 42.
• Yan Uchiha — Fugaku's brother-in-law, a young clan prodigy whose training group, newspaper, and research negotiations bring the Uchiha into closer cooperation with the village 1 11 19 42.
