Caroni's body swelled. His scales rose, his neck thickened, and the fangs in his mouth extended fully. He burst from the shadows like a dark-green python, gliding through the water at astonishing speed. His serpentine body slid up along the wall, scales scraping a trail of sparks from the brick. Sewage sprayed up on either side of him like a pair of black wings.

He aimed for Jack's wrist. Caroni's fangs targeted arteries. His venom could paralyze the nerves within seconds, leaving his prey unable to resist. His tactic was simple: bite, inject venom, then retreat into the dark and wait for his prey to die.

His fangs sank into Jack's wrist.

The tips pierced Jack's Hardened Skin but lodged in the dermis, unable to go any deeper. The hardened layer stopped them, and venom squeezed from the openings at their tips and ran down Jack's skin without entering a blood vessel. Caroni's pupils widened. He couldn't understand it. His fangs could pierce sheet metal, so why couldn't they pierce this man's skin?

Jack raised his left hand, spread his fingers, and seized Caroni at the spot seven inches below his head.

For a snake, that spot marked the heart and a concentration of nerve centers. Grip it, and the snake lost its ability to fight back.

But this snake was too big. Jack couldn't get a grip.

So Jack stopped trying to grab him and drove his hand straight toward Caroni's heart, triggering Colossal Consumption at the same time.

The blow struck Caroni's heart. His body stiffened, and his tail thrashed across the ground, whipping spray from the sewage. Instinctively, he pulled back two steps.

Jack released his right hand. A faint red glow of Decay spread over his fist. One punch, then another. He unleashed ten in a row. Every blow landed over Caroni's heart. Scales shattered beneath his knuckles, and blood sprayed out. The third punch destroyed the heart, but Jack didn't stop. By the tenth, Caroni had been torn in two at the chest.

Blood and shredded flesh burst from the wound, staining the black sewage dark red. Caroni's body convulsed. His serpentine length slid off Jack's arm and fell into the sewage, slapping a few final splashes from the surface. His tail lashed once more against the wall, leaving a streak of blood, then drooped into the water and lay still.

Colin handed Jack a stack of documents. Sewage had soaked the edges, blurring some of the writing, but most of it was still legible. The heading read "Caroni Family Supply List," and it was signed with a code name.

"Joker."

Colin read the name aloud. "The documents record transactions between the Caroni Family and this 'Joker.' Large quantities, large sums of money. I checked: 'Joker' is well known in the Underworld, but nobody knows his real identity."

Jack flipped through a few pages, folded the documents, and slipped them into his pocket. He didn't investigate further. This wasn't the time. His priority was to wipe out the remaining forces in the West Blue and uproot the Caroni Family's influence on Caria Island.

"Where's the Caroni Family's main force?"

"Downstream. They fled through the sewers toward the docks, hoping to escape by ship. I flew up to take a look. The tunnel downstream splits three ways, but all three branches meet at the same exit in the reefs on the north side of the island. I sent the recruits around by the surface to block it."

Colin shook his wings, flinging off the sewage, and his feathers fluffed up again. "I took them there myself. They haven't trained for long, but they should be able to handle a bunch of stragglers."

Jack looked at him and nodded. "Keep up."

Godo emerged from the tunnel behind them, covered in filthy water and muck. A stone had cut his face, leaving blood mixed with mud along the gash. He walked hunched over, still gripping his iron club, which was smeared with blood.

"Damn it, I've been crawling through these sewers for half an hour. My legs are numb from crouching." Godo came over grumbling, stepped on a slick stone, and stumbled, nearly falling. "Boss Jack, can we fight somewhere else next time? The sewers stink, it's pitch-dark, and there's not even anywhere to sit."

Jack ignored him and headed deeper into the tunnel. Colin followed, holding his wings slightly open for balance. Godo cursed a few more times, rapped his club against the wall twice to shake off the blood and mud, then jogged after them.

The downstream tunnel was wider and taller than the upstream passage, and the sewage was deeper, reaching their calves. Niches lined both walls at intervals, stocked with oil lamps and weapons. Some still held unfinished food and half-drunk bottles of wine. The Caroni Family had fled in such a hurry that they had left plenty behind.
