Power Progression

Background and History

Jack awakens in a cage on Banaro Island with memories of his village being attacked and his mother being taken. Forced to fight for the Capone Bege Mafia Alliance’s underground arena, he survives his first match by acquiring Heartsteel through a mysterious system. He subsequently kills the arena’s Lynx-form fighter and Bege’s Doberman-form bodyguard 1 6 10.

When Bege offers him a Devil Fruit in exchange for lifelong service under Seastone restraints, Jack crushes the fruit instead and escapes. He returns to Iron Cage City, kills the Vice Warden who controls prisoners’ shackles, and helps Colin free the fighters before destroying the facility’s ammunition store 11 12 14 15.

Jack joins the 16th Branch and leads operations against the West Blue mafia, including the rescue of eleven children from a slave ship. After uncovering commander Bastian’s offer to help Bege eliminate him, Jack arrests Bastian and becomes acting branch commander. He defeats Bege’s forces at Iron Fist Island and receives command of the branch; later, he leaves Colin in charge when Headquarters summons him for training 19 28 35 37.

At Marine Headquarters, Jack trains in the Six Powers and passes an early-graduation test by remaining conscious for three minutes against Garp. Tsuru appoints him Four Seas Special Inspector and sends him to hunt wanted Devil Fruit users in the East Blue. There, he defeats Lion Fang, apprehends the disguised Vario, and recruits Roronoa Zoro after winning a duel 42 44 45 46 50.

Appearance

Jack’s first use of Heartsteel changes him from scrawny to heavily built. He is later described as two and a half meters tall 1 46.

Personality

Jack is restrained in speech and often expressionless, even after killing an opponent. He studies fighting patterns and terrain, and will retreat or change tactics when a direct contest favors the enemy 1 14 23 32. He chooses system rewards for practical use rather than spectacle 10 14 35.

He protects captives and prioritizes rescue, but is ruthless toward opponents he considers threats. He shields Colin from an arena execution and tells him, “We save people first”; later, he orders that none of Bege’s armed personnel be taken prisoner. He arrests Bastian rather than executing him, saying punishment belongs to a court-martial 8 19 34 43.

Abilities & Skills

Heartsteel and close combat

• Hardened Skin lets Jack withstand many blades, bullets, claws, and heavy blows, though powerful attacks can still wound him 5 12 34.
• Daily hardening strengthens his body over time. Devil Fruit sacrifices increase Heartsteel’s stack limit, while higher stacks increase the damage of its charged Colossal Consumption strike 1.
• His strength allows him to break shackles, doors, and armor, but fast or unpredictable fighters can still force him to rely on timing and other abilities 15 23 31.

System rewards

• Blade of the Ruined King drains vitality through his strikes and helps him slow opponents; its effect wears down even Iron Mask’s armored defenses 14 31 41.
• Ghost increases his movement speed. Zhonya’s Hourglass provides protective stasis 10 41.
• Decay slows an opponent and can restore some of Jack’s health when he strikes 23 34.
