Background / History
Family and congenital illness
Qiuyun is A Xin’s daughter and Ling Moxue’s younger half-sister. A Xin had loved Ling Youdao before Ling Leng took her as his eighth wife. After A Xin died, Youdao honored her deathbed request and raised Qiuyun as his own daughter, ensuring that she lacked for nothing in the Ling Household 6.
Born with defective meridians around her heart, Qiuyun required years of spiritual treatment and medicinal support. Youdao also taught her cultivation, but she stalled at the First Level of Qi Refining. As medicine became less effective, he turned to demonic methods to save her 6.
His eventual plan was for Qiuyun to possess Moxue’s Heavenly Demon Spirit Puppet, curing her defect and improving her Spirit Root from Five-Element to Three-Element. Qiuyun could not bear the prospect of taking her sister’s life, yet remained beside Youdao and accepted the Blood-Melting Pill he prepared for her. The possession never occurred 6 12 20.
Entrusted to Luo Fanchen
Before dying, Youdao entrusted Qiuyun to Luo Fanchen and offered his inheritance in exchange for Luo seeking a cure. Without a cultivator tending her meridians, he feared she would survive only seven days 12.
After reuniting with Moxue, Qiuyun distrusted Luo’s Master-Servant Blood Contract and feared he might eventually exploit her sister’s rare physique. She offered to replace Moxue under the contract, bargaining with inherited treasures and even proposing dual cultivation. Luo refused to bind her and instead revised Moxue’s agreement to provide another route to freedom through repayment of resources 15 17.
Qiuyun subsequently transferred Youdao’s hidden Soul Banner legacy to Luo and helped him refine the artifact. Although grateful for his care, she admitted that she still resented him for her father’s death. Meanwhile, her illness worsened until she became bedridden and could remain awake for only about three hours a day 18.
Death and preservation
Luo found no medicinal cure, but realized that the Soul Banner could preserve a cultivated person’s soul as its main spirit. He used a Blood Absorption Pill to convert Qiuyun’s body into blood essence, then gathered her souls and spirits before they dispersed. Her heavenly soul had instinctively taken refuge in Moxue, allowing him to recover the final missing part 18 20.
After prolonged nourishment, Qiuyun awakened as the banner’s stable main spirit and reunited with Moxue. Luo held out the possibility that Moxue might someday restore her to life if she joined a Dao Sect and reached Core Formation; this remained a possibility rather than a guaranteed cure 20 21.
Flying Cloud Market and the bandit campaign
Qiuyun transported Luo and Moxue toward Flying Cloud Market using the Soul Banner. Along the way, she fought bandits and consumed their blood and spirits, but argued that their families should be spared. At the market residence, she helped establish the banner’s concealed Spirit-Gathering Formation and became an important contributor to Luo’s talisman-making income 22 23 24.
She also detected Old Wang’s poisoned wine and retaliated through Soul Poison transmitted by Xiao Cui. When Luo learned that the intermediary would suffer depleted blood and vitality, he arranged nourishment for Xiao Cui as restitution 26 28 30.
During later hunts, Qiuyun helped advance the banner, supported Luo’s ambush of Chang Hao, and refined captured cultivators into spirits for interrogation. She then helped seize and conceal the Baleful Pill, exhausting her Soul Power while containing its resentment 40 43 44 47.
Romantic intentions
Qiuyun gradually recognized that her attachment to Luo was romantic rather than merely familial. She feared that he would continue treating the sisters as children, leave them behind, or arrange marriages for them without understanding her feelings 30.
Her insecurity deepened after she overheard Luo say that Moxue was more important. She withdrew from her sister while privately seeking Luo’s closeness. When the sisters finally spoke openly, Qiuyun declared that she wanted to become Luo’s cultivation partner and spend her life beside him. She remained determined to pursue him while promising to keep Moxue first and share him if her pursuit succeeded 44 48 49 50.
Appearance
Qiuyun is introduced as a refined but sickly young lady. Her later manifested form appears healthy and graceful, while her unformed Soul Body can float above the ground, become translucent, or dissolve into dark smoke 6 21 36.
- Face and eyes: An oval face, narrow or dewdrop-shaped eyes, and vivid red lips 6 36.
- Beauty mark: Initially described beneath one eye; later passages place it near the corner of her mouth 6 30 36.
- Hair: Long black hair, reaching her waist in her nighttime visit to Luo 17 30.
- Clothing: Wears a modest, elegant green chest-high dress when bringing Luo food and the inherited Storage Bag 18.
- Illness: Before death, becomes painfully thin, with dry, sallow skin and severe exhaustion 18.
- Puppet form: Creates a replacement puppet resembling herself; Yun Mo later recognizes that its body houses an unusually intact spirit 30 36.
Personality
Qiuyun is gentle, generous, and protective. Moxue credits her childhood care with helping her survive and remembers that Qiuyun never looked down on servants. Even after becoming a Banner Spirit, she retains enough compassion to oppose killing the bandits’ families 13 22.
Her gentleness does not prevent stubborn decisions. She offers to sacrifice herself for Moxue’s freedom, hides her terminal condition to spare her sister, and later uses Soul-Dulling Incense to keep Moxue out of a dangerous battle despite her protests 17 18 43.
She is also observant and eager to be useful. Assisting Luo gives her a sense of belonging, but her poor original aptitude and disembodied existence leave her afraid that the more gifted Moxue deserves his care more. The Soul Banner amplifies her jealousy, anger, and desire; affection for her sister and Luo repeatedly helps her resist those impulses 21 24 26 49.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Body and manifestation
As the Soul Banner’s main spirit, Qiuyun retains her awareness and can alternate between a manifested form and a Soul Body 21 49.

- Uses Luo’s essence blood and Yi Wood spiritual energy for nourishment and stabilization 21.
- At the stage documented in Chapter 24, requires five Wraiths per month for sustenance 24.
- Talisman-making, puppet refinement, formations, and resistance to the Baleful Pill’s resentment can severely deplete her reserves 24 34 38 49.

Soul Binding and ghost command
Qiuyun uses the banner’s arts to extract, refine, and command souls 24 40.
- Refines Wraiths for Luo to command and assists with Soul Search for intelligence 24 40.

- Helps produce Bloodburst and Rejuvenation Talismans, bearing most of the mental burden 24.
- Assists with puppet construction, then takes over after Luo produces an unattractive, barely qualified First-Rank Low-Grade puppet 29 30.
- Identifies the Soul Power–based poison hidden in Old Wang’s Spirit Bamboo Brew by testing it on a Wraith 26.
- Recognizes how Luo’s rapid fireball casting changes the surrounding spiritual energy and disrupts opponents’ spellcasting 47.
Soul Poison
Qiuyun uses Soul Poison against Old Wang, exploiting negative emotions to accelerate its effects 28 30.
- Transmits the poison through Xiao Cui and deliberately controls its timing 30.
- States that Xiao Cui’s life is not endangered, but that her blood and vitality will remain weakened for over a year 30.
- Reports Old Wang’s deteriorating condition as the retaliation takes effect 30 36.
