Background / History
Jiraiya returned to Konoha after years away and was enthusiastically welcomed by villagers who believed he could finally discipline Naruto. He enjoyed the praise, unaware that much of it stemmed from the village’s desperation over Naruto’s disruptions. 79
The Third Hokage maneuvered Jiraiya into becoming Naruto’s teacher by lending him the Crystal Ball. Jiraiya initially considered himself deceived, but accepted the arrangement and began Naruto’s instruction with the Summoning Technique. 83
Naruto’s behavior quickly tested Jiraiya’s patience. After Naruto summoned and attempted to use the Great Toad Sage as training weight, Jiraiya firmly explained that summoned beasts were partners rather than tools. 84 85 Naruto’s destructive training repeatedly made Jiraiya share responsibility for damage across Konoha. 86 88
Despite their frequent arguments, Jiraiya gradually became a reliable mentor and father figure to Naruto. He taught him the Rasengan, assessed his Light Gate Space-Time Ninjutsu, considered teaching him the Flying Thunder God Technique, and recognized his exceptional potential. 87 104
Jiraiya later accompanied Naruto to Mount Myōboku for Sage Art training. He supervised Naruto’s Toad Oil practice and Taijutsu sparring, though Naruto’s poor Sage Art aptitude and excessive use of Toad Oil exhausted Mount Myōboku’s resources. 154 155
Appearance
Jiraiya is a white-haired older man, widely recognizable in Konoha by his distinctive hair. 79
- Usually wears wooden clogs. 87
- Has temporarily dyed his hair blond for a planned confession to Tsunade. 174
- Once wore a red Wangzai Spirited Lad bodysuit and Bean Shoes at Naruto’s urging. 174
- Has appeared bare-chested in overalls while attempting to conceal his identity. 329
Personality
Jiraiya is carefree, vain, and frequently irresponsible, especially when avoiding blame for Naruto’s actions. He enjoys alcohol, brothels, voyeuristic “research,” and praise for his writing. 79 88
He is easily flustered by Naruto’s recklessness and often calls him an “insolent” or “rebellious” disciple. Nevertheless, Jiraiya consistently protects Naruto, takes responsibility alongside him, and takes pride in his growth. 86 205 536
Jiraiya is notably timid when it comes to confessing his feelings to Tsunade. Naruto had to physically drag and pressure him into approaching her, while Jiraiya repeatedly tried to retreat. 174
