Background

Kakashi was among the jonin asked by the Third Hokage to investigate Naruto’s dangerous tree-punching training. Although he and Might Guy recognized Naruto’s determination, Kakashi also understood the harm caused by the boy’s lack of proper guidance and reflected on Naruto growing up without Minato’s support. 13

After other jonin refused the assignment, the Third Hokage appointed Kakashi as Naruto’s instructor partly because Naruto was Minato’s son. Kakashi reluctantly accepted, then introduced himself as the jonin leader to Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. 31

During the bell test, Kakashi was overwhelmed by Naruto and Sasuke’s coordinated use of Space Gates, Shadow Clones, Fire Release, and evasive maneuvers. Beneath that indolence, Kakashi is observant and responsible as a teacher. He identified Tazuna’s deception, tailored future training to each member of Team 7, and tried to guide Naruto away from harmful habits despite recognizing that Naruto’s knowledge and behavior were unusual. 45 57
