The whites of his eyes were wider than normal, and in the light, his pupils had irregular octagonal outlines. Thick black fuzz was clearly visible beneath his cheekbones.
The human teeth that should have lined his mouth were being replaced by a sharper set arranged more like a predator's.
His canine teeth were far sharper than they should have been, and his molars fit together with mechanical precision when he closed his mouth. His whole head looked disturbingly like an oversized spider's.
Thor's eyes went wide. He instinctively snatched up Mjolnir from beside the sofa.
"Your face!"
"I know you're worked up, but don't panic just yet." Peter hurriedly raised both hands in surrender, sounding wearily accustomed to this reaction.
"I know my face looks a little... off right now, but I'm on your side. I'm also your landlord, remember? I let you eat and stay here for free for two and a half days."
Thor's mouth hung open. Several seconds passed before he recovered enough to speak, his voice muffled.
"What happened to your face?"
Loki hopped down from the windowsill and strolled closer with his juice. He cut in at an unhurried pace.
"You'd probably have to ask Om Messiah about that. Russell, that is. He altered Peter's genes and evolved him into Six-Armed Spider-Man. From the looks of it, the process hasn't stopped yet."
He glanced at Peter, the faint smile on his lips carrying the detached seriousness of a scholar studying a specimen.
"Honestly, if my theory is right, give it a little more time and you probably won't see many human features in the mirror. You might grow eight eyes, and where you shoot webs from could get a lot more interesting."
Peter's face fell. "That doesn't sound comforting at all."
