Ch. 181Spider-Man's Mutation
Chapter summary
- Tony confronts the rampaging Steve Rogers. Steve, corrupted and destabilized by Tesseract energy, believes everyone is part of a Hydra conspiracy and attacks the Helicarrier. Tony tries to reason with his old friend, warning that destroying the carrier would kill innocent people, but Steve rejects him.
- Tony uses the Celestial Armor to stop him. Steve fires a powerful beam of Cosmic Energy, which the armor’s Celestial Shield withstands. When Steve charges in close, Tony brings the giant armor down onto the carrier and restrains him with its Sealing Module.
- Steve is subdued. A golden Celestial energy net suppresses the Tesseract power and repairs the corruption affecting Steve’s body and mind. His aggression fades, and he loses consciousness. Tony’s intervention saves the people aboard and gives S.H.I.E.L.D. a chance to recover, though the carrier is badly damaged. Tony quietly hopes Steve will wake to a more normal world.
- Russell receives news of the Celestial Armor while dealing with a giant creature in the Pacific. He dismisses the idea that the technology could be used against him, then senses something and turns his attention toward Queens.
- In Peter Parker’s home, Thor has settled into an undignified routine. After losing his former status as God of Thunder, he has been eating, drinking, and earning money by repairing roofs with Mjolnir. Peter and Loki joke about his transformation; Thor, drunk and disoriented, briefly mistakes Peter’s home for a job site.
- Peter removes his Spider-Man mask and urges Thor to wake up before Aunt May finds him passed out. As Thor looks at Peter, Peter’s face begins visibly changing into something inhuman, ending the chapter on a cliffhanger.
Character developments and interactions
- Tony balances concern for Steve with the need to protect others. He ultimately chooses force, but treats Steve as a friend to be rescued rather than an enemy to be destroyed.
- Steve is consumed by paranoia and rage until the Celestial technology suppresses the Tesseract’s influence.
- Thor has shifted from majestic warrior to comic, financially struggling handyman and houseguest.
- Peter and Loki share dry humor about Thor’s fall from his former dignity. Peter then takes responsibility for the situation and tries to manage Thor.
- Russell appears confident in his own power, but his attention turns toward Queens just as Peter’s mutation begins.
Significant themes

- Loss and adaptation: Thor’s diminished circumstances contrast with his former identity, while he finds a practical use for his abilities.
