Structure

• Hell is a system of countless independent subdimensions, not a single realm. Each is a complete, universe-sized territory that can endure without a parent universe 104.
• Named realms include Mephisto’s Hell, Hades Hell, Nightmare Hell, Crimson Hell and Lucifer Hell. Amenth, also called Oblivion Hell, and Limbo are other realms reached during the Mutants’ campaign 104 161 162 207.
• Lords and their forces wage continual wars for territory and power. The supreme title of Satan remains an object of competition 104.
• Demons prey on weaker creatures for flesh, souls and strength. In Mephisto’s realm, toxic fumes, corrosive spiritual energy and soul fragments make the environment dangerous even before its inhabitants attack 104.

Dominion and Souls

• A Hell realm has its own will and energy field; declaring ownership is not enough to make it accept a new ruler 149.
• A ruler’s bond with a realm can supply power, healing and rebirth. Oblivion loses all three when Russell severs its quantum connection to Amenth 165.
• Hell’s demons can claim the dead. Russell later creates a Divine Kingdom that intercepts believers’ souls, and he prevents a demon’s mark from dragging Erik Lehnsherr into Hell 139 140.

History

The Ancient One takes Russell into Mephisto’s Hell for training. He withstands its hostile energy, fights its demons and meets Mephisto, who declares both visitors protected guests before agreeing to spar with them 103 104 107 109.

Amenth becomes the target of a Mutant invasion to rescue Apocalypse’s family and the first-generation Mutants trapped there. Magik establishes a route through Limbo; Mephisto then invades Amenth as Russell challenges its ruler, Oblivion 161 162 163.

Russell defeats Oblivion by cutting its connection to Amenth and seals the former ruler in his Divine Kingdom. He gives the conquered realm to Mephisto, who later transfers its ruling mark to Blackheart while retaining a hidden means of revoking his authority 165 169 207 208 216.
