Ch. 1Omega-Level Potential
Key plot points and events
- At the Agravall Experimental Base, researchers declare Subject 47, Bertrand Russell, dead after an experimental injection. Dr. Caspin orders his body returned to his cell and says it will be incinerated if he shows no signs of life within 24 hours.
- Russell revives in his cell, battered and confused. A guard, Conrad, insults him and throws his food on the floor.
- Russell recovers memories revealing that he has awakened in the Marvel Universe as a mutant and is imprisoned for experimentation. His recorded ability—mental defense—seems too weak to help him escape.
- A mysterious “Ultimate Evolution System” binds to him. Its status display reveals three abilities: mental defense, superhuman healing, and psychic telekinesis. The latter two are barely developed, but the system indicates telekinesis can evolve toward molecular-scale control.
- Seeing the potential of his healing and telekinesis, Russell gains hope and believes he may eventually qualify as an Omega-Level mutant.
Character developments
- Russell shifts from a disoriented, angry prisoner to a determined survivor. The system’s revelations replace despair with cautious confidence in his future potential.
- Dr. Caspin is established as a detached, calculating researcher who treats subjects as disposable.
- Conrad is introduced as a cruel, openly anti-mutant guard.
Significant themes
- Dehumanization and prejudice: Mutants are treated as monsters and experimental material, stripped of dignity and safety.
- Survival and hope: Russell faces an apparently hopeless situation, but the system gives him a possible path to escape and growth.
- Potential versus present strength: Russell’s abilities are initially weak, yet their capacity to develop may matter more than their current power.
Character interactions
- Caspin calmly dismisses Russell’s apparent death and orders guards to return him to his cell, showing the base’s clinical brutality.
- Conrad taunts and mistreats Russell, reinforcing the hostility mutants face from ordinary people.
- Russell has no meaningful ally yet; his first turning point comes through his private interaction with the system.
