History

Yoru brings Naruto to Jiraiya for training. Jiraiya initially refuses, but Yoru tells him about Naruto’s neglected childhood and challenges him over his absence from Konoha. Feeling guilty, Jiraiya agrees to teach Naruto; Yoru specifically asks him to cover the Rasengan and Summoning Technique 26.

During the Konoha invasion, Jiraiya summons Gamabunta to confront Shukaku. After Hiruzen’s death, he comforts Naruto when the boy learns that his parentage was concealed from him 29 30.

Jiraiya later insists on infiltrating Amegakure to investigate Akatsuki despite Yoru and Itachi’s objections. Tsunade cannot persuade him to stay, and he promises to contact her if he is in trouble 67. In Amegakure, he reunites with Konan, who conceals her connection to Akatsuki. Suspicious of the respect the villagers show her, Jiraiya doubles back and discovers that Nagato controls a body bearing Yahiko’s face 69 70.

Jiraiya rejects Nagato’s plan to use a devastating weapon to deter war. He battles the Six Paths of Pain, initially trapping three with the help of the toad sages. When the Paths return and overwhelm him, he focuses on getting intelligence back to Konoha. Tsunade arrives and saves him; Jiraiya then fights beside her and Orochimaru against Pain 70 71 72. He later remains in Konoha and helps Mitsuki defend the village from controlled jinchūriki 91 105 106.

Appearance

Jiraiya has white hair that he can lengthen and harden for combat. In Sage Mode, his nose grows larger, bumps appear on his face, and his arms become toadlike 26 70.

Personality

Jiraiya is boastful and quick to joke, even before dangerous missions. He calls himself the Toad Sage and repeatedly argues with Naruto over the boy’s preferred name, “Pervy Sage” 26 67. His affection for his students is earnest: he is proud of what he believes Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan have accomplished in Amegakure, making Konan’s deception difficult for him to accept 69.

He nevertheless pursues the truth when something seems wrong. Against Pain, he accepts that he may not survive and prioritizes passing on what he has learned 70 71.
