Background and History

Itachi is Fugaku and Mikoto Uchiha’s son and the older brother of Yoru and Sasuke. Konoha secretly asked him to spy on the Uchiha clan as tensions between the village and clan rose. Troubled by the prospect of violence, he sought Yoru’s advice 2 5.

Yoru suggested that an Uchiha becoming Hokage could avert a coup. Itachi and his close friend Shisui presented the proposal to Konoha’s leaders, but were rejected. Fugaku interpreted their effort as loyalty to the clan; Itachi was left questioning whether the village and Uchiha could coexist 3 4.

When Root attacked the Uchiha compound, Fugaku had already ordered Itachi to stay out of the clan’s planned coup and escape with his brothers if it failed. Hiruzen Sarutobi intervened, named Itachi a candidate for the next Hokage, and ended the massacre attempt without the clan’s destruction 5 7.

After Hiruzen’s death, Itachi’s succession was approved. Tsunade and Danzō challenged it during his inauguration, but Yoru and the Uchiha clan defended his claim. Itachi took office as Fifth Hokage and pledged to protect Konoha 30 32 33.

Personality

Itachi is usually reserved, but relaxes around Yoru. He trusts his brother’s judgment even when Yoru’s plans trouble him, and remains protective of both younger brothers 2 5 29.

He seeks peace without forcing people into an illusion. Shisui’s apparent defection shook him enough to break his usual composure, yet he refused to join Shisui’s proposed Infinite Tsukuyomi 9. As Hokage, he favored disbanding Root while sparing Danzō, in contrast to Yoru’s willingness to act against him covertly 30. His restraint has limits where family is concerned: at the Five Kage Summit, he protected Sasuke from the Raikage and accepted criticism for putting his duty as a brother first 89.

Abilities and Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

• Itachi can use Tsukuyomi to incapacitate an opponent; he brought down Kisame with it while defending Kakashi 31.
• Amaterasu produces black flames. He used it to breach the barrier around Hiruzen’s battle and strike Orochimaru 30.
• He initially kept his Mangekyō concealed, and its use carries a physical cost 29 104.

Susanoo

• Itachi’s orange Susanoo reached its Second Form immediately after his Mangekyō awakened. It carried the Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror 10.
• He used Susanoo to withstand Mabui’s dangerous Heavenly Transfer Technique and to cut apart a meteorite over the Allied forces 103.
• Sustained use drained his ocular power during his fight with Madara 104.

Ninjutsu and Combat

• Uses Fire Release techniques including Great Fireball and Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson, the latter combining flames with shuriken 10 58.
• Used Multiple Water Dragon Bullets to restrict Shisui’s escape routes 10.
• Employs crow decoys, substitutions, kunai, and close-combat feints. During a test of Naruto, Sakura, and Mitsuki, he repeatedly outmaneuvered their coordinated attacks 9 58.

Relationships

• Uchiha Yoru — Younger brother and trusted adviser. Yoru steered him toward the Hokage position and defended his succession; Itachi can hear Yoru’s unspoken thoughts 2 3 32.
• Uchiha Sasuke — Younger brother. Itachi sought to keep him safe during the clan crisis and later protected him at the Five Kage Summit 5 89.

Story Role and Major Arcs

• Akatsuki threat: As Hokage, Itachi gathered and shared intelligence, called a Five Kage Summit after Sasuke’s reported capture of Killer B, and argued for Konoha to lead the resulting alliance 86 87.
• Fourth Shinobi World War: He commanded the Allied Shinobi Forces, urging former enemies to cooperate. When Madara appeared, Itachi transferred command to Shikaku and went to the battlefield himself 94 103.
• Battle with Madara: Itachi rejected Madara’s plan to impose peace through Infinite Tsukuyomi. Their Susanoo clashed, but Madara’s poisonous forest later incapacitated Itachi, leaving his immediate fate uncertain 104.
• Later years: Years after the war, Itachi had stepped down as Hokage and reunited with Shisui and other elite ninja to face arriving Ōtsutsuki 120.
