She walked toward the mirror. The woman reflected there looked so strange, so cold. Her eyes held no emotion, as though she were nothing but an empty shell.
"Is this the future you want?" her reflection asked coldly.
Yan Zhi's heart sank, her pupils contracting sharply. "No!"
Her eyes flew open, and her awareness snapped back to reality. She took a deep breath and broke free of that distorting force, resolve filling her eyes.
"No. I won't become one of you," she said quietly. Gripping the hilt of her short blade with both hands, she began gathering her strength again.
Jiu Jia Yi said nothing. He simply stood beside her, his gaze steady as iron. He knew Yan Zhi had chosen her path, and he would walk it with her.
The Mirror Realm shook violently once more, and space began to collapse. The dark force tried to swallow them, but Yan Zhi's resolve only hardened. Clutching her short blade, she closed her eyes and chanted an ancient incantation under her breath. As her voice rang out, the darkness around them began to recede, and the tears in space gradually healed.
Yet just as calm seemed about to return, the Eye of the Center suddenly released a dazzling light. It carried an indescribable pressure, as though everything would be changed forever in that instant.
Yan Zhi and Jiu Jia Yi stood side by side again, facing the light. Neither felt the slightest urge to retreat. Their resolve had only grown stronger.
"We'll keep going together."
The light drew closer, threatening to swallow everything. Yet Yan Zhi and Jiu Jia Yi stood at the center of the vortex without falling. Each had their own battle to fight within, and the shock of that moment sent violent ripples through both their minds.
Yan Zhi felt her heartbeat quicken. In that instant, all her senses grew almost unnaturally sharp. She could hear herself breathe and feel the air moving across every inch of her skin. She could even hear the heart of her mount whispering, as though some profound connection bound them. Her gaze remained fixed on the source of light ahead, as if it were the only direction left for her.
"Will you stay with me until the end?" she asked softly. Her voice was almost swallowed by the light around them, leaving only its clear echo in her own mind.
Jiu Jia Yi's eyes were deep, his resolve unwavering. "No matter where we go or what we face, I won't leave you alone." He held her hand tightly, conveying a conviction that had never wavered.
She lowered her head slightly and looked at their clasped hands. No words could describe the strength she found there. It was as though their souls were destined to lean on and support each other through this endless darkness. Something long suppressed stirred deep within her. She remembered all they had been through: their first meeting, when she had kept her head down and said nothing, like a wounded animal too afraid to rely on anyone. Then came his protection, his steadfastness. Little by little, he had helped her emerge from the shadows she had thought she could never escape.
She was no longer alone. Her life was now bound tightly to his.
"I know," she murmured, a faint smile touching her eyes. "I know you've always been there."
The instant she lowered her head, the light flared so brightly it almost hurt her eyes. A beam descended from the sky, bearing down with crushing force, as though it meant to shatter her body and soul.
