Yan Zhi felt the short blade trembling harder in her hand. That familiar power seemed to surge from deep within her again, bringing an impulse she could barely contain. She did not hesitate. Gripping the blade tight, she frowned and fixed her gaze on the blurry figure before her. The threat she had felt all along was closing in on her heart, as though the whole world were collapsing.
She turned to Jiu Jia Yi. He, too, was watching the humanoid creature. Never had they understood each other so well. Without a word, they exchanged a look. They were both ready to face whatever fate awaited them.
"You should not have come here." The creature's voice rang out again, laden with sorrow. It moved slowly, its steps light, yet each one seemed to land on Yan Zhi's and Jiu Jia Yi's hearts, bearing down on them with crushing pressure.
"We had no choice." Yan Zhi's voice was calm and cold. Her gaze struck at the blurry figure like a blade, without a trace of fear. "What you call fate does not decide our choices."
The creature laughed again, its hoarse, low voice echoing as if from an abyss. "Choices? What choices do you have? You were always destined to become a continuation of all this."
Yan Zhi's heart sank. The fears she had suppressed surged up again, as though invisible hands were closing around her throat. But she did not retreat. She tightened her grip on the short blade, her resolve hardening.
She knew she had to break through the predicament before her. Whatever its source, she could not stop here. "We have to find an exit," she whispered to Jiu Jia Yi. "We have to break this cycle."
Jiu Jia Yi's gaze remained steady. Though his expression betrayed nothing, his doubts had long since faded. He looked into her eyes, seeming to read something in them and sense her unwavering resolve.
"I know," he replied softly. "We won't let this thing trap us."
Their exchange was brief, but at this moment between life and death, it felt like a pact between their hearts, binding their strength more closely together.
Suddenly, the creature stopped and lowered its head slightly, as though pondering something. Yan Zhi held her breath and watched it, unease stirring within her.
"You don't understand." Its voice grew quiet, filled with an indescribable sadness. "This is not something you can change. Every time you resist, I grow stronger."
The words shook Yan Zhi, piercing deep into her heart. She sensed a deeper truth hidden behind them. The creature was no mere enemy. It seemed to have seen through her fear and helplessness long ago. Perhaps its very existence was part of some vast mystery.
"Is that true?" she asked, her voice low but sharp.
The creature raised its head. Its blurry face remained expressionless, but something complicated seemed to flicker in its eyes. "You cannot escape. Every inch of this place is watching you. Every time you think you've found a way through, 'memory' will swallow you. You cannot return to your world, and you cannot leave this place. You have already become part of us."
